How often and how far to drive cars to keep them in good shape

Eric

I own three cars – each around four / five years old. I just wondered what the minimum mileage I need to do per week to avoid rust/ battery problems, etc.

Please let me know what you think.

Many thanks

  1. Hi Peter –

There are different opinions out there, but here’s mine:

Rust is best avoided by keeping the car away from moisture. So, park it indoors if possible. Also, keep it clean – as dirt will accelerate rust by trapping moisture.

I try to start/drive all my vehicles for at least 30 minutes at least once a month. I also top off the tank with fresh (and treated with stabilizer) gas. This procedure will help keep the carb/fuel system from gumming up, keep the engine’s (and drivetrain’s) internals well-lubed (including seals and gaskets).

I also hook up lightly used cars/bikes to a battery tender, which will help keep the battery from running down.
