Eric, it’s the all-new 2014 Mazda6 that’s getting the Skyactiv-D diesel, sometime in mid–2013. I work for Mazda at a low level and speak only for myself, and this is the word we got—and also given at the LA auto show.
No word on other applications for the diesel yet. Nothing about a diesel 3, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a diesel CX-5 eventually.
My opinion is that if Mazda would build a compact pickup with Skyactiv technology including the diesel, we’d have waiting lists at the dealers. Not the BT-50 sold overseas, mind you, which is almost full-sized, but something more like the old B-series made years ago. Ford sold 50,000 Rangers per year in the US during the last few years that pickup was made without even running ads (as the truck was supposed to be discontinued but demand kept postponing the end). There is a market in the US for compact pickups, I think. Especially thrifty diesel versions…
Well, almost… the 2013 Mazda3 will be available – soon – with the 2.2 liter Sky-D diesel. Other Mazda models will offer Sky-D, too – either spring/summer 2013 or by 2014.
