Once again, the Conan O’Brien show has revealed countless examples of local media reading off the same script, proving that most corporate news outlets do nothing more than push national talking points.

  1. Back in the 1990’s when I had an antenna which received TV broadcast ( I refuse to get a digital antenna – fuck them, the commercials were bad enough) I used to get so frustrated with the system – because I believed it was supposed to be what it proclaimed itself to be – as I flipped between the channels of the major networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS during the national news and they would play the exact same stories, in the exact same order, with the exact same verbage, and often they would use the exact same film footage. Flipping back and forth from station to station was like watching a singular station. It was gross. I thought to myself, “How can everybody Not notice!?”

Perhaps it was then I discovered how people *I* were being played for suckers?

It’s getting to be at the point where I wonder if there even is such a thing as an American Journalist these days? They’re all just actors saying whatever they are told to say. Conan’s bit just highlights it.

“…I have given my whole life to newspapers. I am convinced that they have abandoned their functions, and in an abject and ignominious manner, in the present war. Nine-tenths of them, and even more than nine-tenths, print the official blather without any attempt to scrutinize it… It is a disgraceful spectacle, but I do not believe that anything can be done about it.” – H.L. Mencken

But that makes me wonder, why is Conan’s bit even being allowed to be aired? I find it hard to believe there’s even that much autonomy that he can do that unless TPTB have a reason for it. How controlled is everything?

    “How controlled is everything?”

It’s sad I can even type those words, and yet they are truthful, denied by few, and yet… nobody gives a shit.

Snowden can proclaim it from the hills and Clapper can lie about it all he wants, because no body gives a shit.

    Not enough of us anyway.

And, that’s also why Gitmo is still open, and the empire is expanding it’s other wars.
Why torture is in our jails, and elsewhere is still ongoing.
It’s why the War Against Some Drugs still prevails.
It’s why the war against little boys is non stop.

Its just like that Russian guy said, nobody is going to believe things have gone horribly wrong until the military boot is kicking their big fat bottom while telling them to get inside the gates to the camp,…. or in America’s case, the whole country becomes “The Camp”.

What’s that they say, “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”?

cRap, my problem is, “I believe that it is better to tell the truth than to lie. I believe that it is better to be free than to be a slave. And I believe that it is better to know than be ignorant.” – H.L. Mencken

They used to say shit like that in my country, before it became more “their” country.

    • I can speak to this – as a guy who did work within the system as a writer/editor (and personally know people who do).

Gonna elaborate at length – post coming soon.

UPDATE: Done, see today’s lead story.

  3. Conan, age 50, was the president of Harvard’s National Lampoon while a student there. I remember as a kid, it seemed an edgy source of alternate thinking and boundary pushing writing. I sometimes boosted an issue of National Lampoon at the same time as an issue of Playboy.

I guess this used to be pretty tame stuff for its day, but now of course, even this kind of thing is effectively banned and hard to find. Only formulaic humor that degrades and enstupidates can be allowed to exist.
