Last month, I was able to afford to have an IT guy take a look at the site and fix a few things. Hopefully, you’ve noticed. The site should load (and look better) on mobile devices now, for one. He also inserted some “click” ads, which, unfortunately, amount to me giving them free space to promote their stuff. I much prefer legitimate ads – for products I can personally vouch for (like V1 radar detectors, for instance).
But guys like Mike Valentine are the exception rather than the rule. Most want freeeeeeeee (or the nearest thing to it) space.
Which brings us back to you, the reader.
Independent, non-corporate media (that’s EPautos) relies on you, the reader, to keep things afloat.
To give you a handle on what that means, our dedicated server and backup costs about $250 a month. Yes, there are “virtual” and other less expensive servers. But those servers crash when you have traffic – which EPautos does. The site receives 200,000 visits on average a month. So we need a serious server.
Also, an IT dude. I just spent $500 to get the most urgently needed fixes fixed.
So, the bottom line is, I can’t do all this for free – much as I wish I could. I should probably have been a “good Republican” water-carrying shill (like Coulter or Hannity) back in the ’90s, when I could have… and become rich doing so.
Then I could afford to do this for free.
But then, you’d probably have zero interest in reading anything I wrote because you could’t trust a thing I wrote, my being an ex Republican shill. Which is kind of like being an ex-AIDs patient.
No such thing (assuming the thing in question is still living).
So, I need your help. I wish I didn’t, but I do.
Will you help us?

It looks like he’s on a shared hosting service, doing NVH
I got a different IP back, which also happens to be the same IP that ns1.ericpetersautos.com resolves to for me.
This is what a HEAD on port 80 returns:
Server: Apache/2.2.27 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.27 OpenSSL/1.0.1e-fips mod_bwlimited/1.4
SSH is openssh 5.3, which is pretty darned old, unless the system in question is running a super-heavily patched version, like would be the case on CentOS 6.x. I’m going to venture a guess that the provider is running a bunch of CentOS 6 servers and/or VMs.
If I had any clue what any of that meant, I’d hazard a reply!
It’s a fairly common name, but is this the work of clover?

Well, that’s all public to scrape (shouldn’t be, but is)
My question was intended to find out hardware-level specs.
Out of curiosity, what kind of server(s) does the site run on now?
Has anyone else been having issues with the ‘Latest Stuff’ sidebar updating? Sometimes when I post a comment, it reverts to an older version, and sometimes when I click on a comment to go there, it just takes me to the top of the article I was on.
Clicking the refresh button seems to fix it, temporarily at least, in either case. But it seems weird.
Now it seems that even the refresh click is not working. Unless no one is posting. We’ll see when I try to post this.
Thanks for the heads up, Phillip – trying to figure it out!
Don’t know if you did anything yet, but it seems to be working better now.
PtB, for several months or maybe longer, nearly every time I click on a epa link I get a fail to find server and it will take forever to load. Close that out and click it again and it’s liable to load right up. I don’t think this is a WP problem or a settings problem. I notice this on nearly every site I commonly read and you can guess they’re not MSM.
Thanks, Phillip – but I can’t take credit. I have an IT dude on call, though…
I still can’t log in. I get an error message that says “No login protocols have been established” or something like that.
And it also asks for a password, which I never remember having.
