Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply:
Tom asks: Will anyone ever find a way to keep the back window on a SUV clean other than having to use the small imperfect wipers? I remember our standard car or pickup did not have this problem.
My reply: Larger wipers (as up front) would solve the problem, of course! But that would mean . .. larger wipers. The small/single wiper typically used on the rear glass of a crossover/SUV is a compromise. It’s enough to clear a “window of visibility” but not the majority of the glass.
Pick-ups have the same issue; it’s less apparent because the glass area is typically less. Cars don’t (generally) have the issue at all because their rear glass is either smaller or sloped sufficiently such that rain and the action of the airflow over the car at speed keeps the glass reasonably clean.
Now, all that said, you can improve the situation by waxing the rear glass; or use RainX or a similar product. Try it, if you haven’t. Bet you’ll be glad you did!
