Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply!
Aaron asks: What, if anything, can you tell me about the VW diesel pickups from the late ’70’s to the early ’80’s? I might know where I can get one. The body looks in good shape on the surface, but I haven’t heard it run.
My reply: The VW pick-up from that era is basically a Rabbit with a bed. Not that there is anything wrong with that! The diesel version is hugely desired by people who esteem a simple diesel. It’s slow – and it’s smoky – but the thing will go 400,000 miles. It does not have a turbo and is mechanically injected. No Rube Goldberg emissions rigamarole.
Some good tech data is here.
And because of its age, it qualifies for “antique” plates in most states and so is exempt from both saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafety and emissions testing!
Get it before someone else does. Seriously.
