ASS – Automated Stop/Start – is becoming almost impossible to avoid in new cars . . . emphasis on almost.
One way to avoid it – even in cars that otherwise have it – is to buy the car with a manual transmission. So far, they haven’t figured out how to make ASS compatible with a clutch.
As an example, the 2019 VW GTI (Rabbit Edition) I am test driving this week comes with ASS, unless you buy it with the standard six-speed manual transmission.
Then no ASS!
The bad news is that many new cars don’t offer a manual anymore – and so in that case, there’s no way to escape ASS – at least insofar as factory equipment.
Look for a column about how to defeat ASS soon. There is an app for that.
