Making Mercedes Great Again

Mercedes appears to be sobering up – but that Green EV Kool Aid packs one hell of a punch.

Germany’s most prestigious luxury car brand after BMW has begun to realize that people who have Mercedes money to spend are not much interested in driving devices that aren’t much different from other brands’ devices.

Much less waiting around to drive a device – while it charges.

That latter is as “luxurious” as waiting for the bus.

One of the main reasons people spend luxury car money is to not be one of the proles stuck in a queue – whether for they’re waiting for the bus or waiting for a charge. I experienced this ignominious situation myself when I last had a Mercedes device to test drive. It was a six figure EQS – which is a device made to look like a Mercedes S-Class sedan. The difference being that with the EQS, you get to wait like a Prole with a broken-down Yugo at Sheetz or some other semi-seedy shopping plaza parking lot while the guy in the Yugo gets back in his vehicle and drives wherever he needs to go.

Unsurprisingly, Mercedes has discovered devices aren’t selling. More finely, battery-powered devices aren’t selling.

Batteries are great for starting engines but this idea of replacing engines with batteries is a non-starter, especially for the luxury brands because people with that kind of money to spend do not like waiting and do not like driving what amounts to the same thing as everyone else and especially everyone else who hasn’t got luxury car money to spend. Exclusivity being one of the things people who have luxury car money expect to get for their money.

But what is exclusive about a device?

I wrote about how the EQE – another Mercedes-badged device  – is so similar to a Hyundai-badged device it’s difficult to tell the difference. Except as regards price. There are tens of thousands of dollars’ difference between the EQE device and the Hyundai device but that’s about all the difference there is. Other than the badges, of course. Is a plastic three-pointed star really worth $30k more than a Hyundai badge?

Apparently not.

What people with Mercedes money to spend expect – more finely, what they have a right to expect – is more than just a three-pointed star for the extra $30k. Something like a Mercedes V8.

And that’s coming, according to just-released teasers about a “major upgrade for the S-Class,” that will apparently include an all-new V8 and the retention of the V12 engine. Both of these engines are as far from devices as Bruce Jenner is from being a woman. Reversing course – more finely, waking up and smelling the coffee – is on order. Mercedes  says it intends to “master” a “transformation” – which is quite a different thing than the “transition” to “electrification” it had committed to about four years ago, when it bet on Green Communism spreading its poisonous leaves into a thicket from which none could escape.

That did not happen for a variety of reasons, among them the truth getting out about what it’s like to actually live with a device – which is what got me in trouble with Mercedes such that the company decided to punish me for truthfulness by no longer sending me devices (or vehicles) to write about.

But – too late. The cat is already out of the bag.

Another reason is that device-pushers did not take into account the effect of alternatives to devices. Why buy a device when you do not have to? Why not just drive a vehicle – new or used – that does not force you to spend all that time and hassle waiting around for a charge – and worrying about how much charge is left?  If the device-pushers had been as smart as they are malicious, they would have found some excuse to make those alternatives untenable, as by imposing huge “pollute pays” registration fees/taxes on them or by adding a $10 surcharge to the cost of every gallon of gas. That might have pushed people into devices and then people with Mercedes money to spend would have queued up, probably.

But they didn’t think to make the alternatives to devices untenable and that plus the truth about devices leaking out and the changing political situation has all-but-put-and-end to this device-pushing.

Thus the return of engines and in particular, V8 and V12 engines – which are two things that transform a device into a Mercedes. The first thing being they are different than other brands’ engines. A Mercedes V8 (or V12) is unlike any other brand’s V8 or V12 and the difference is even greater when the other brand only has batteries to offer. But most of all, they are exclusive – particularly now given how “exclusive” even a V6 has become.

But – aye – therein lies the rub.

It is wonderful to see Mercedes going back to Mercedes-appropriate engines. Less wonderful is the nascent exclusivity of such engines.

While it is true that a V8 (let alone V12) equipped Mercedes was never exactly affordable, there was a time when they were not as exclusive – as exotic – as they have become. V8s used to be fairly common in $60-$80k luxury cars and were available as recently as two years ago in $50k non-luxury-brand cars such as the Charger (that’s now a device). Go back about 14 years and V8s were available in $30k cars such as the Ford Crown Vic, which was about the same size as a new S-Class Mercedes, too.

This new V8 will likely be available only in six-figures-plus luxury cars such as the S-Class, which currently stickers for $117,700 with a V6 engine.

What do you suppose Mercedes will ask for one with the new V8?

This isn’t just a Mercedes issue, either. It is of a piece with the general paradigm shift – accelerated by the device-pushing that arose in consequence of the green pushing – toward less for more for most of us and a lot for the very few who can still afford the luxury.

Ferrari and Porsche are further cases-in-point. They are developing “green” (synthetically produced) gasoline to power their engines. The stuff is expected to cost $20 per gallon, which is no impediment to people who can afford a Porsche or a Ferrari.

But it will automatically exclude 99 percent of the rest of us.

This is as intentional as it is subtle. “Green” means red. It means opulence for the few and less for the rest. We are already arrived at the point that a V6 engine is a luxury item found almost exclusively in exclusively priced vehicles. Such engines are not going away; they are just becoming unavailable.

Kind of like a new home.

Kind of like pretty much everything else.

  1. Make engines great again.

Mercedes Benz is a car I won’t buy. Other choices are out there.

It is time to view the alignment of eight planets if the sky is clear tonight.

Oh lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends
So oh lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz

      • I’m watching you guys say that, it seems like you’re in, ‘The Trump Fog’. It’s quite like watching the spaz/germaphobes freaking out about The Plandemic.

        [Disclaimer: I’m not TDS.]

I’m reminded of back in the ’80’s watching WWEF or whatever they called fake wrestling on the TeeVee. My friends would get all wrapped up in it. You guys, & many others, are acting the same danged way.

While watching that T. vs. Z. event …You didn’t feel like you were watching Hulk Hogan smash a chair over… ?

Meanwhile, in the background, the MNRA vax, it’s working it’s way into your food chain. T is ok with that & culling tons of chickens & turkeys with toxic forever foam.

The Vax for you, is being distributed in the bees right now, it’s already in the pork, it’s already in some beef, they’re working on getting it into the chickens,… one way or another, team T will Vax you & you’re cheering them on?

  2. yay!!! now let’s hope they put the v6 back in the E series.
We had one, great car, then went to get another one and it was a 4cyl-T. I knew but didn’t tell my wife. I made her drive it first (cause I knew).
She said “what they hell is wrong with this engine!” haha……………….
we walked and told he dealer why. bought a grand cherokee v8.

    • How’s the Jeep GC straight line steering? Got my 2018 aligned by a place that actually did it correctly and it is better but not great. Rather drive the ‘91 Silverado with 190k on it than the “herding cats” Jeep.

  3. “Ferrari has taken a significant step in its journey towards carbon neutrality by shutting down the gas-fuelled trigeneration plant at its Maranello factory. This early shutdown, three months ahead of schedule, is part of Ferrari’s decarbonisation plan,”

Money or not,,,These people are plain nutzzzzzzzz. They remove carbon from the atmosphere then use it to make their carbon neutral gas.

One (1 – 1-1/2 ) more percent further down (co2) and its curtains folks. Plants die then the animals…..us. The pakled are winning!

  4. Trump issued an order Feb 19 to have a review conducted of regulations, including for constitutionality. Hopefully CAFE & emissions will be identified as having no constitutional authority and will get the ax.

Then some normalcy can return and this dopey experiment in EVs will be over.

  5. Current C63 is an amazing performance car…that nobody wants to buy, and for one simple reason – no V8. Fire it up and you get….electric silence.
Aside from trucks/SUVs (if my math is correct) there’s only 3 remaining V8 passenger cars available in US for under $70k – base Vette, IS500 and the “bargain basement” Mustang GT.
    Insane.

  6. Somewhere under all that stuff surrounding the guts of a V8, are a set of spark plugs that will take hours to uncover and change. Then hours to reinstall the stuff correctly so that V8 will run again.

      • My buddy’s mother in law had an early ‘60s white Impala “sleeper” with a 409! She really enjoyed smoking the teens hot rodders off the stop lights back in the ‘70s.

  7. Will these new vehicles still have all of the nanny-tec digital spyware?

Could the real reason for this push to electrify be.. distraction?

A diversion, keeping the heat off what really matters to the controllers.. control?

Just like our newly installed president that has made us sigh in relief.. when actually 90+ percent of evil schemes are STILL running full steam?

Has the Trump administration put an end to the police state’s use of surveillance on the American people? Has it scaled back the deployment of military forces domestically in violation of Posse Comitatus? Has it ceased the government’s war on cash? Has it stepped back from the NDAA’s threat of indefinite detentions? Has it de-militarized the police? Has it kicked the oligarchs out of the government’s inner circle? Has it been transparent and accountable in all of its dealings?

The answer to all of those questions is a resounding “no.”

    Just a thought.

    • Sadly true AMC Guy, and all of Eloon’s minions are sucking up every bit of data Fedgov has on all of us; saw a few clips of them going into various agencies and they look like a bunch of students on H1B visas. So they give all our info to Muskrat and he and his AI set up “digital passports” for all of us, along with CBDC’s, social credit scores, the whole dystopia. Meanwhile Orange Man just smiles and goes along for the ride. We are doomed.

      • They already have this Mike. It was done under Dubya’s Administration beginning in 2006. It is your US Passport.

As for Musk he could have built the data based on the information from PayPal, Tesla, Starlink, and the constant rotation of his satellites.

Of course, people are more than willing to post their entire history on the likes of TikTok, X, Facebook, and Instagram and they were more than willing to stand in line to get their noses swabbed. They also have no problem with FedEx or the grocery store scanning their ID or supplying undue amounts of information when they apply for anything and everything. I won’t even bother mentioning the idiots that allow their car insurers to trace their whereabouts to “save” a few extra dollars, purchasing cars that film you and listen to one’s conversations, and the constant carrying of the largest surveillance device in the world…their cell phone…to which they actually use their fingerprint to open.

Sorry, I don’t buy the whole Elon is out to get us viewpoint. He is too busy trying to keep track of his Baby Mommas to care how much in taxes I paid in 2018.

        • The continuing black-pilled comments are getting a bit tiresome under the current circumstances. I’m not saying Trump or Elon are anybody’s saviors, and I’m not giving up my suspicions or skepticism any time soon, but the Trump admin has existed for about 5 weeks so far. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see about 90% of what has been done and publicly exposed so far. Just the opening of the Overton window alone is remarkable. The political climate is such that Florida’s governor has publicly stated that property taxes should be abolished.

Given how oppressively and tyrannical government has become over the past 100 years, I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve seen over the past 5 weeks. To expect that all of it will be rolled back in a month or so is beyond unrealistic. I’m willing to give it a wait and see before reverting back to “we’re doomed.”

          • I agree with everything you have written, ML. I am taking a break from media (news, online, even people…somewhat), because the constant blow back and brow beating. My clients with TDS are freaking out so badly that they are now defending IRS auditors! The media has whipped up so much drama in regards to “tax refunds are going to be late” that they are calling and emailing me. When I tell them 90% of all efiled returns are not even seen by a pair of human eyes, but are processed by computer from beginning to end or how I am not that upset that The Administration has fired 6000 small business IRS auditors I am accused of defending the Trump Administration! No…I just don’t like auditors or a bloated government.

Some days the constant rotation of negativity and zero hope scenarios is too much for me to listen to or read so I don’t.

            • “My clients with TDS are freaking out so badly that they are now defending IRS auditors!”

Hilarious how the Stockholm Syndrome works!

Maybe your clients could volunteer for audits to make sure those auditors have work to do and can keep their cushy jobs. 😉

          • I hear you guys!

Certainly an argument for positive thinking can be made!

A very wise person once told me ..

“Hope for the best -but expect the worst, this is the only way you will be prepared”

Within the confines of logic and common sense I agree. 😉

  8. Can’t even tell what that MB engine photo is. V8? V12? Gasoline? Diesel?

    Just a blob.

Better than a device but who can get excited about an overpriced, over complicated, expensive to maintain blob?

I visited a favorite vintage car forum this morning and based on the posts there, I’m again reminded that 99% of people lobby for their own enslavement. The virtue signaling there now makes me want to puke.

2020 was an inescapable wake up call that the world is just full of empty minds and endless virtue signaling.

This Mercedes U-turn is just another reminder that these corporations and people have no principles. They will do or say whatever they believe is convenient in the moment.

I no longer care if Mercedes were to cease to exist.

  9. MB realizes they shoulda had a V8. Old farts will get the 70s commercial alliteration.

What about the cafe diktats? MB just forks over money to Elon?

  10. ‘Mercedes bet on Green Communism spreading its poisonous leaves into a thicket from which none could escape.’ — eric

They changed the Garden of Eden into the Garden of Evil. With a couple of strategically-placed commas, “Eats Shoots and Leaves” morphed into “Eats, Shoots, and Leaves.”

    B-a-a-a-a-a-d-d-d-d!

As Eric cautions, one should not assume that Mercedes has repented of its crooked ways. Six figures for a V8? And moreover, one with a three-foot square black pizza box on top, which makes the display engine look so top heavy that it might fall off its pedestal.

You’d think Mercedes could at least offer a pink plastic version for Caitlin Jenner and the manly sisterhood. 🙁

    • Erst kommt das Fressen

‘First comes the eating’ — Berthold Brecht, quoted by blogger ‘b’ at Moon of Alabama

‘In the alternate reality of German politics the U.S. is a friend. It did not blow up the Nord Stream pipeline and it did nothing to provoke the proxy war with Russia. In the alternate reality, the weakness in the German manufacturing sector has not been caused by it.

‘The German election has brought another Brecht opera to my mind.

‘Living in their alternate reality, the ruling parties in Germany have forgotten that “Fressen” (Engl.: guzzling, seizure, scoring) comes before “Moral” (Engl.: ethics, morale, values).’

How does Mercedes expect to build cars in a punked country where even the so-called ‘Conservatives’ are pink-tinged socialists? This will not do:

  11. Imagine a world where there are different classes, but the base product is no different. Of course one doesn’t have to imagine, just look at commercial aviation. There’s economy class, business class and first class. Everyone cues up at the gate but the first class people board first. The rest of us get to sit around and watch (unless you’re a hero in uniform, that gets you privileges). Once aboard you get an ever shrinking space of the plane, shared with the rest of the hoi-polloi. First class seats are superior in just about every measure, service is much more pleasant and you get to embark and debark first. But otherwise the plane goes to the same place no matter how much you paid for your ticket.

At some point along the way someone realized those seats at the gate have more in common with the cattle class seats on planes than first class. So to incentivize rich and frequent fliers the airlines started opening semi-private clubs at the airport. These had comfortable chairs, food and beverage and no CNN Airport Network blasting at 120dB. Luxury while you wait.

If given enough time to build out charging networks, eventually a similar class system will emerge for EVs. You over there in the Mazda can hang out at Sheetz while the Merc owner can cool their heels at the MB Travel Service Center. But building out such a network on speculation that someday people will buy these things is risky enough as it is. You have to build out the entire network at once, although you could plan it around large metro areas first. Maybe convince the dealers to set aside a space for snacks and massage chairs too?
