Another Clover…

Twenty years ago, I moved away from the DC area to get away from drivers who can’t. The best way to do this being to move to an area where there are fewer drivers, which reduces the number of drivers who can’t and usually leaves you with plenty of room to maneuver around the few you encounter who can’t.

But – as the slave whispering in the ear of Caesar during his Triumphs used to say – all glory is fleeting.

The drivers who can’t proliferate. There seems to be no escaping them.

It was fun while it lasted.

  1. I’ve noticed the proliferation of Clovers ever since they turned my former rural area into a over-developed suburban nightmare. They keep a following distance large enough to fit a semi or two between them, they drive under the speed limit, they slow down for curves that can be taken at speed and they arbitrarily hit the brakes when there is no reason to do so. It’s infuriating.

  2. Most annoying/incompetent/careless/slow drivers in my area
of Florida are those in vans and pickup trucks. Surprisingly,
Tesla drivers are usually in the right lane and no bother.

My 400hp ride is enjoyable, except for being harassed
by unmarked Florida police – useless, and I’m taxed
    to pay for this nuisance.

  3. It’s even worse when you consider the speed limit is already likely under posted. So they are not only going way below the “legal” limit, they are going even slower than the natural speed of most drivers. So you have the 55mph speed limit that should be at least 70, which the traffic probably would run normally at mid 60’s. Then you have this guy doing 45, doing ten under the legal limit and 20 under the natural speed.

And people wonder why there is so much road rage!!

One of my shortcuts to work is a road that is under posted at 30mph. The natural speed is 50. So if there is a legal limit it should be 55, not 30. So sometimes it’s not a shortcut because you get stuck behind some clover doing 25….. It’s still a worthwhile shortcut, because you can do 50 when its clear, because there are no good places for the fuzz to run speed traps (the town is known for its speed traps).

  4. This morning, a recent vintage F-150 was doing 10 mph below the 40 mph speed limit. Of course this truck, with either a V-8 or a 3.3 liter V-6, had to brake to almost a complete stop around a big corner.

Do they not think their huge 17-inch (minimum) tires can’t handle that corner or their truck with at least 248 hp can’t get up to at least the speed limit, which was written for cars with drum brakes and 14-inch bias-ply tires? Or are they just slow?

Some of us have work and other things to do and I always get stuck behind them when I need to get to an appointment or have a pending bathroom emergency.

As a Catholic, I believe that I’m not supposed to rage at my fellow human beings, but the amount of chutzpah sends me to the confessional once a week.

  5. I did the same, moved from the mess of western WA to a quiet central WA county. Ok out of town 8 miles where I am. Town itself has grown much in 12 years and is now a Cloverville of drivers. On the bike I’ll take longer routes around town to avoid the mess. One exception is my favorite gas station is near downtown the scooter likes the no ethanol premium top tier they sell.
