The FDA says nothing – truthful – about the drugs it pushes on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry that controls the FDA through revolving door appointments to its high offices (among other methods) so why should it be surprising that the EPA says nothing about the dishonest way electric vehicle range/mileage is advertised?

Leave that to the South Koreans – who still apparently have a regulatory apparat that isn’t a wholly owned subsidiary of the industry it regulates.

The country’s Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) just laid a $2.2 million fine on Tesla for “exaggerating the driving range of its cars on a single charge, their fuel-cost effectiveness compared to gasoline vehicles as well as the performance of its Superchargers,” the latter a reference to the so-called “fast” chargers that always take much longer to partially charge an EV than a gas pump takes to fill up a non-EV.

These are, of course, facts.

What’s interesting – and corollary – is the willful avoidance of addressing them, in the U.S. By the U.S. regulatory apparat. The same apparat that went medieval on VW for claiming its diesel-powered cars were “clean” when they were only 99.7 percent “clean” rather than 99.8 percent “clean” and also went after Hyundai nearly as mercilessly when the company claimed some of its cars delivered 40 miles-per-gallon when in fact they returned closer to 37.

These are heads-on-a-pin differences compared with the EV differences – such as the 50 percent reduction in actual driving range in cold weather noted by the Koreans. And by Americans (including this writer) who drove EVs over Christmas, when it got very cold. Compounded by the “fast” charger only instilling 80 percent charge – leaving the EV driver with 20 percent less charge (and so, range) to resume his (short) journey.

There is also the 50 percent-plus reduction in range that attends using an electric truck to pull a trailer only about half as heavy as its advertised maximum capacity in temperate weather (as this writer and others have reported on).

Nothing is said – by the regulatory apparat – about the effect on range (and so, on cost) of driving an EV on other than mostly level roads, as opposed to up hills – the latter often dramatically shedding range as you ascend. The apparat also tells people nothing about the shedding of charge – and so range – that takes place when the EV is inert, if it is not plugged in when it is left. This loss can be significant (this writer experienced as much as a 20 mile diminishment in range after leaving an EV unplugged – in the cold – overnight). It is like a gas-engined new car with a pinhole leak in its tank – a thing the apparat would never abide and which most buyers would probably like to have been informed about before they bought their EV.

Instead, the apparat says things like “56 MPG e” – as the window sticker reads on the ’23 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe this writer recently test drove. All EVs (and plug-in hybrids, like the Jeep 4xe) advertise these very impressive-sounding “MPGe” numbers, which are arrived at via a Byzantine formula that is said to result in an equivalence to the miles-per-gallon numbers we’re all familiar with – and understand.

Which are accurate – and had better be. Ask Hyundai what happens when they’re not.

The sticker says this car will go 30 miles in city driving on one gallon of gas – and 38 miles on the highway. This averages out to about 34 miles-per-gallon. If the car’s gas tank holds 15 gallons of gas, you have a very good idea how far it will go before it runs out of gas.

And if it doesn’t – and does – you have a lawsuit.

This “MPGe” business is – how shall we put it? – a great deal more flexible. It assumes it’s not very cold. It assumes there is no load. It assumes it isn’t very hilly. Assumptions that are irrelevances as regards the city/highway mileage figures advertised by non-electric cars, which are expected to deliver what they advertise irrespective of things like cold and use of acessories and if they don’t . . . well, ask Hyundai.

In truth, an EV’s range can and often does vary considerably. And less range equals more cost – for the charge as well as the time. Especially at the “fast” charger, where electricity costs much more than it does at home, where the charging times are much slower (as in many hours, if not overnight or longer). Many “fast” chargers apply a substantial fee just for using them. This writer got hit with $6 at an EVGo “fast” charger before a single volt was transferred to the EV he was “fast” charging.

The much higher cost of “fast” charging negates almost all of the cost-savings of not spending money on gasoline – obviating the economic justification for driving an EV.

There is also a hidden cost of “fast” charging, that being the effect on the long-term “health” of the battery – the term in quotation marks to emphasize the fact that it is exactly the word used by one EV manufacturer (Ford) in its EV owner’s manual for the F-150 Lightning, where it cautions against regularly “fast” charging else risk the “health” of the battery. By which is meant its longevity. Regular “fast” charging – and regular discharging – are not good for the health/longevity of EV batteries; to do so regularly is to risk having to replace the very costly battery sooner.

But if you do not use the EV’s range (and so, discharge the battery) the EV’s actual range is very modest. And if you do not “fast” charge it you will find that you won’t be able to use the EV very much. It  took three days to put 70 miles of range back into a Mercedes EV this writer test drove recently, at home, using standard household 120V current.

It is possible to slowly-charge a little faster at home, on 240V current – which is the most current available at home. But the apparat doesn’t tell people that many homes are not wired for this and that they will have to pay hundreds at the least (possibly, a few thousand)  to have their homes wired to be capable of it.

You might call all of this deceptive advertising – and yank the chain of the vehicle manufacturers doing it. But that assumes the chain is held by an apparat inclined to yank it.

Which it isn’t, except when it suits.

The EPA will and has crucified vehicle manufacturers for slightly exaggerating mileage claims – or understating “emissions.” But it is silent as death when it comes to exaggerations of 50 percent and higher – when it comes to EVs.

The why that is is an interesting question, isn’t it?

    What a moron….lol…she said electricity comes out of a wall plug,……. when someone called her on it she was forced to admit where it actually comes from, ie burning natural gas far away at a power plant….lol…a lot of fuel was burnt at the power plant to make the electricity….the lying CEO doesn’t bother to tell you this…she just lies…..all the EV bs is based on lies….lol

    Most electricity is generated burning hydrocarbons, how green is that? 95.1% of electricity comes from dirty sources…

    90% of electricity is generated by burning coal, gas and oil, so that is what powers EV’s

    In a power plant fuel is burnt to boil water which makes steam which turns a turbine that powers a generator that makes electricity…

    Thermal efficiency of power plants using coal, petroleum, natural gas or nuclear fuel and converting it to electricity are around 33% efficiency, natural gas is around 40%.

    Then there is average 6% loss in transmission, then there is a 5% loss in the charger, another 5% loss in the inverter, the electric motor is 90% efficient so another 10% loss before turning the electricity into mechanical power at the wheels.
    33% – 6% – 5% – 5% – 10% = 25% efficiency for EV’s.
    (under not ideal conditions, like when it is very cold it might be 12% efficient).

    25% efficiency means to get 1 gallon equivalent energy at the wall plug means 4 gallons of fuel were burnt back at the power plant….

    NOTE: a diesel is 50% efficient….lol…so why are they pushing 25% efficient EV’s (in very cold weather 12% efficient)

    the 2014 Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion diesel, is capable of a claimed 88.3 mpg imperial, or 73.5 mpg U.S.

  2. My boss has driven an Audi etron suv for a couple years now. Lives up in the mountains where its now snowing. Has a 240 volt charger in garage. Have heard no complaints thus far. Im wondering how long this will continue.

    • A member of the Porsche club had a 5000 lb Taycan, he traded it in for a 3000 lb Cayman GT4……because of the driving dynamics of a 5000 lb car on a track……..EV’s are only good at linear acceleration, zero to 60 mph, in a 1/2 mile they are slow, their power drops off, ice cars eat them…..on corners they are horrible, braking…. same problem….too heavy…..

      the best track cars are the ultralights, like the super 7 around 1200 lb, the Lotus Elise is good about 1700 lb. all the quickest cars in the world are 2000 lb or less…..

      The new EV’s are very boring they are all way over weight whales and they lack any emotion, you can’t hear, smell or feel these cars…..

      1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7

      The RS is the ultimate 911 and is special because of the way it drives. Sure it is rare and expensive, but it is the driving experience that elevates the 2.7 RS to icon status. The sound, the acceleration, the free-revving engine, the feel through the steering and chassis, the cornering poise, the wieldy dimensions, the look and smell of the thing. It is engaging, fun and it just sucks you in. Sure, 210 bhp and 188 lb/ft of torque doesn’t sound like much today but remember the RS Sport weighs only 900kg (2000 lb.) so that power is more than enough.

      It is genuinely fast, in both outright acceleration and point-to-point pace. It hits 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and tops out at 155 mph. It is small and narrow with deep windows and slim pillars, so there’s road to spare and you can see it all, it feels faster and the speed is more encompassing than in today’s models.

      You can do 100 mph in a McLaren 720S and not even blink an eye. Doing 60 mph in the 2.7 RS it feels like 100 mph and you are enthralled by the experience. Too many modern cars of great pace slip up here; the 911 RS 2.7 is more usable and enjoyable than any of them.

      It’s such an easy car to drive fast too. The rear engine and the plentiful high-revs torque simply make this a car steerable on the throttle. The sound is unmistakable – a deep bass driven yowl overlapped with fast-paced tapping and the rush of accelerated air. The higher the RPM, the better it sounds.

      The Carrera RS earned a reputation as the ultimate driver’s 911. Even today, superlatives like thrust, pointability and adhesion are levelled at the Carrera RS driving experience. It’s raw, unadulterated air-cooled 911 at its most focused. The signature flat-six wail, as it passes through the 4500rpm mark on its way to the redline is one of the more iconic soundtracks and, with such low weight and respectable power, it’s still quick by today’s standards

      The Porsche Carrera RSR had proven its worth in its first race at the Daytona 24 hr. and would dominate GT racing for several years and become one of the most successful GT cars ever. The 2.8-litre engine would quickly be replaced by a more powerful 3.0-litre unit. The RSR would win Daytona again outright in 1975 and 1977 as well as Sebring in 1973, 1976 and 1977.

      None of the new cars including the supercars/hypercars can give you the same experience they are all over weight.
      The quickest cars in the world usually weigh 2000 lb or less, a modern 3000 lb to 4500 lb supercar/hypercar will never be as fast, you can’t overcome that much extra weight.

      To overcome the weight they add huge hp, this makes the car unstable so they control it with, stabilize it with AI, computers, they drive the car you don’t. These aren’t driver’s cars you are just along for the ride….
      The new EV’s are worse they are all far over weight and they lack any emotion, you can’t hear, smell or feel these cars.

        Another 2000 lb perfectly balanced analog sports car the 924 GTR, the new over weight supercars today don’t compare.

        To go racing in the Group 4 class at Le Mans, Porsche needed to homologate the company’s 924 race car. As such, Porsche built 406 road-going versions of the 924 Carrera GT to satisfy the FIA’s rules. Porsche being Porsche and looking to over-engineer everything, two subsequent evolutions of the 924 Carrera GT followed; a 924 Carrera GTS and the 924 Carrera GTR.

In race trim, the 924 Carrera GTR weighed in at a featherweight 2,050 pounds, which meant the cars were capable of hitting 180 miles per hour down the Mulsanne straight (before the chicanes were added) at Le Mans.

        Porsche brought a handful of 924 Carrera GTRs to compete in the GTP class in the 1980 Le Mans 24 hour race, with the best car finishing sixth overall ahead of everything except prototypes.

        The 924 had a great history in racing, in race trim the maximum power they got from the Audi block engine (it originally was a Mercedes engine), was 550 hp, later on using the new 2.5 turbo 944 engine they got 750 hp from that engine.
        At Le Mans the Porsche 924 GTR Carrera Turbo was quicker then the 944 turbo race car when restricted to Le Mans engine power restrictions.

I completely agree with Jim H this EEEEVVVV obsession has all the characteristics of a Stalin five-year plan….or Lysenko-ism which is the manipulation of science for political ends….. just ask all the Russians and Ukrainians who starved to death how that turned out. I have also come to the conclusion that I will NEVER buy any vehicle that has any screen larger than about a 3 x 5 index card (double din stereo) and comes with real knobs, buttons or sliders for heat, cooling, lighting and other necessary controls. Real gauges are also a plus.

      They don’t have a clue what causes climate to change, much less knowing that “we did it”. There are multiple factors, and very few are understood at all. There is a reason the species has advanced so rapidly in the last 10k years. Warmer weather. What did we do to cause THAT global warming? Whatever it was, we need to do more of it. Lest we return to a world covered in ice. Warmer is better. Whether it threatens high priced real estate on the coasts or not. “Record” drought, rain, storms, etc. fails to mention we’ve only been keeping records for 140 years or so.   6. Why that Mini Countryman only gets 27 MPG running on gas, while sporting a 1.5L, 3 cylinder engine, should be cause for concern. The manual Geo Metro got more like 38 MPG. My stepson is lucky enough to be driving one right now.

    Also, anyone following the Speaker of the House kabuki? Why all these nobodies? Nominate Thomas Massie. He’s easily the best man in Congress, though I know that isn’t saying too much.

  7. Hi John, I was taught you admit you were wrong as soon as you learn you were. In my biz, if you’re wrong it costs big, so our people must admit a mistake or they were wrong immediately.
    I apply it to life as well and have passed it on to my kids.
    You’re right though, the masses seem to be copying our politicians and never admit anything that is wrong. It isn’t going to end well. And why I tell my kids and their peers that they will be standing way above the frey in the long run. I hope I’m right.

      If not for government propaganda, subsidy, and the regulatory attack on their competition (ICVs) there would not be a market for EVs large enough to justify mass production.   9. EV’s are the ultimate bait and switch, marketed as saving all kinds of money on gas while skipping the inconvenience of it all. Electricity is not free however, and its price is accelerating by leaps and bounds. Our prior rate of about 22 cents/kwh is scheduled to increase by about 25% starting now, and I’m sure that won’t be the last increase. Soon gas will be cheaper than the equivalent amount of electrons….gotcha suckers 😆

      “Electricity is not free”, and is perhaps the very worst way to transmit and store power. Subject to constant power loss, in both transmission and storage.
      Fine for your toaster or your vacuum cleaner, where there is a positive convenience factor. Not so much with vehicles, and their high power demand, and a total LACK of convenience.

    One can refuel an ICE vehicle in less than 5 minutes.
    Vehicle range is not compromised by the use of heaters, air conditioning or lights.
    The typical “electric vehicle” battery contains approximately 120kw/h of energy.
    The typical “electric vehicle” can hold the equivalent of less than 4 gallons of gasoline.
    It can easily take one-half hour to refuel an electric vehicle at a “fast” charger. Level 1 or level 2 chargers take HOURS to “refuel” electric vehicles. In addition, “fast chargers” shorten battery life.
    Electric vehicle range is severely compromised by the use of heaters, air conditioning or lights. In fact, both hills, extreme hot and cold climates severely affect electric vehicle range.
    Not only that, electric vehicles are never truly “off”; batteries discharge even when not being driven.
    Let’s not forget the weight of electric vehicles, most of which weigh over 5000 lbs.
    In a nutshell, electric vehicles are not ready for prime-time. Electric vehicles are “playthings for the rich”.

    • Yes, and apologies to our host, but it never takes me any five minutes to fill my gas tank. I’ve never timed it, but I’d guess more like 90 seconds. I know I have to hustle a bit to get the oil checked before the pump kicks off. Don’t misunderstand — I do spend at least five minutes at a gas station. But that’s because I’m an old guy and usually have to go inside and drain my personal tank before continuing.

As I have often said, without the propaganda, subsidies, and regulating away its competition (ICVs), there would not be enough market for EVs to justify mass production. They would be hand made, as most ICVs were before Henry Ford.

      Few people are able to spot it consistently, especially when they are bombarded with it constantly.

      It isn’t solely a matter of intelligence, either.

    Charge only to 80% to preserve batteries = 80% range
    Discharge only to 10% to preserve batteries = 70% range
    Very cold weather range penalty, of up to 50% of range = 35% of range

    In very cold weather, using the charge to 80%, and discharge to 10%, rules of thumb to extend battery life, your range could be 35% of the hypothetical 100% charged range in moderate weather.

    That’s not very impressive for a vehicle that costs a lot more than an equivalent-sized ICE vehicle. And your expensive EV will be powered mainly by natural gas and coal, which are not green fuels, although I suppose t you could paint the coal green?

    To me, the best way to own an EV is for your neighbor to have one. You get a free ride from a proud owner. It’s usually an awesome demonstration of acceleration and of the capabilities of the onboard computer, with all it’s apps. I was impressed.

    I was even more impressed, when I walked away and didn’t have any responsibility. It’s like riding in a friend’s boat or helicopter. You just had the best bargain experience in the world.

          Unless you foolishly take a long trip in an EV,
          because then the stress could harm your health.

          We used to take long driving vacations with up to 1000 miles of driving one way. We find that relaxing, often in a large luxury car, and don’t even care if we get lost — we sometimes found interesting things that way.

          The last thing I want to do on a long trip is to have to locate an EV charging station, wait for more than 10 minutes for “refueling”, and not have an actual building there — a gas station with a mens room, and snacks for sale inside.

          Sitting at an EV charging station in the middle of nowhere seems like the LAST THING TO WANT TO DO WHILE ON VACATION, EVEN IF IN NO HURRAY TO GET WHERE YOU ARE GOING.

    • Lance, I did the same. Two neighbors. They were giddy for the first month or so. And they were ‘cool’. They aren’t giddy anymore. Both don’t plan on replacing them with another EV.
      The hard part for any human being is admitting you were duped, or wrong.
