What’s Not Coming . . . and What Is

Automotive News published a story (just the right word) the other day headlined, General Motors CEO: Anti-drunken driving tech is coming.

No, it isn’t.

What’s being forced – by federal edict, courtesy of the Biden Thing – is in-car technology that will monitor driver performance. The latter is a term similar in its elastic generality to climate change. Both can mean whatever the user would like them to mean and that is exactly why those terms are used rather than something specific and thereby limited to that thing.

For example, global warming – which you may remember if you’re old enough to recall when that was the term favored by Green Communists, i.e., the people who use environmentalism (as opposed to conservationism) to push their politics of scarcity and enserfment for the masses (but never for themselves, the leadership cadre of the environmental movement).

The problem there is that global warming is too specific and thus, too limited. When the globe did not warm in accordance with the rhetoric, which became extremely heated back in the ’90s – people began to suspect the globe was not warming, as per the apocalyptic predictions of Al Gore, et al. The predictors began to appear silly – and were mocked, accordingly. This doesn’t further the agenda of scarcity and enserfment for the masses desired by rich, well-fed men such as Al Gore. Who, by the way, monologued about global warming from behind the wheel of his V8 powered Cadillac Escalade in his movie, Earth in the Balance.

12-13-23_EPonKMED_6AM

So the term for the eternally just-around-the-corner apocalypse was changed to the more elastic climate change – which could encompass any “change.” Which could then be used as putative evidence of the just-around-the-corner apocalypse and we’d better “act” now. By which is always meant they “act” – to further enserf us and enrich themselves.

This is high-order etymological legerdemain and extremely effective at getting people to accept what would otherwise be intolerable.

Which brings us to what’s not “coming” – as if it were just a natural development.

And what is.

“Drunk driving technology” isn’t. Driver performance monitoring technology is. The latter is merely being marketed to the rubes as “drunk driving technology” – in the same way (and for the same essential reason) that environmental apocalypse is marketed to them as “climate change.”

So that they will accept it – without understanding what it is they’re accepting until it is too late to reject it.

If you think this isn’t so you might mull over why it is that within the meat of the edict issued by the Biden Thing the defining language is driver performance rather than “drunk driving.”

When you are forced to stop for no reason – other than you’re out for drive – at a “sobriety” checkpoint, your performance isn’t evaluated. The armed government worker subjects you to various examinations to establish whether you are “drunk” (a term that has also lost most of its prior meaning in that “drunk” can mean having had a drink – or even less, if you’re not old enough to legally drink). The point is the driver is obliged to prove he is not “drunk” to the satisfaction of the armed government worker. Not that his performance as a driver is up to snuff.

What is coming is exactly that – under the rubric of drunk driving technology. It is a technological elaboration of what already exists, piecemeal, in that if an armed government worker notices certain performances – such as your driving faster than the government says you legally may, or that you changed lanes without signaling or made a right turn at a red light, etc. – he will “pull you over.” That is, he will force you to stop using the implicit threat of state-sanctioned violence if you do not – and apply various correctives, ranging from what are styled tickets – i.e., money you must pay the government for having affronted government authority  – all the way to what is styled arrest (i.e., being manacled and put into a cage for having affronted government authority.

The problem is this is piecemeal. Drivers most “get away” with such performances – because there are comparatively few armed government workers relative to the number of drivers. Plus the fact that an alert driver can take various preemptive measures to stymie armed government workers, such as using a radar detector to avoid an encounter with one. There is also the last-resort of avoiding the encounter – by losing the armed government worker. Given the disproportionate costs of an encounter with an armed government worker – not to mention the understandable resentment that arises from being assaulted by one merely for having affronted the government authority – it is no wonder many chose to lose the armed government worker.

Such performances will become impossible when what isn’t drunk driving technology comes online in 2026, as per the edict of the Biden Thing. The car will pull you over when it decides your performance is outside bounds. Or it will automatically dun – via the insurance mafia – you for every instance of driving outside of bounds.

And who will decide the boundaries of acceptable performance?

The very same people – in government – who have already decided you must perform at “sobriety” checkpoints, where it is required you prove you’re not “drunk” to the satisfaction of an armed government worker, despite your having given no reason to suspect that you  might be “drunk.”

An interesting facet of this business is that the Biden Thing’s edict will render owning  a performance car (as well as performance driving) as pointless as trying to eat the fake plastic food placed as decorations on dinner tables at furniture stores.

What will be the point of owning a Tesla or other EV that touts how speedy it is when use of that speed will fall afoul of driver performance standards?

EVs will then have lost their main attraction – or rather, the one that makes up for their many detractions. Would you be interested in paying Corvette money to drive a car that will pull itself over if you fail to drive it like Janet Reno drives an ’87 Yugo?

Of course, that’s just the point. Or rather, the object. They don’t want you to enjoy driving and thereby not want to. Your performance will be used to nudge you in that direction – just a little more than two years from now.

  1. I work at a Subaru retailer in Indiana. We just did our product training on the new 2025 Forester coming out next year. They mentioned new “safety technology” being added to it and being an avid reader of your work, my alarm bells immediately went off. They tout it as “Emergency Stop “Assist.” I mentioned it to some of my co-workers, even my buddy who is relatively red-pilled, and they all dismissed it as being relatively benign saying something to the effect of “oh, it’s only going to be used for if you’re asleep at the wheel.” The naivety! Here is what Subaru says about it. “For the first time on a Subaru, Emergency Stop Assist activates if the driver becomes unresponsive to warnings while using Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control. The new standard safety feature will stop the vehicle, activate the hazard lights, and unlock the doors. SUBARU STARLINK® Connected Services will then place a call to emergency services.”

    • Dan,

Thank you for the inside baseball on this. I anticipated exactly this sort of thing evolving from the less aggressive forms of “assistance” technology people have been habituated to already.

I’m clinging even tighter to my old truck!

  2. WHAT-IS-COMMUNISM Justinian Deception

Many people don’t really know that communism is really the control system for companies, corporations, colonies, plantations etc. Its a slave system, corporate control. A colony is like a foreign occupation corporation controlling its citizens while occupying a foreign land.

  3. It sickens be to see a Botox polyester pant-suit bitch ruining the lives of everyone else. We would save more energy by marching all of these hypocrites into an incinerator. That ought to save us about 6 months of coal reserves!

    • Indeed, Graves –

Who is Barra? What qualifies her to be paid $20 million per year? GM – all of it – has less market share than Chevrolet had in 1970, all by itself. She is presiding over a rent-seeking, virtue-signaling government-snuggling purveyor of devices that most people don’t want and can’t afford anyhow.

In a better world, she’d be getting someone like John DeLorean his coffee.

I knew it, religion fails to fear the plebs into scarcity serfdom, so Original Sin, the crime of being born, that will get you eternal hell fire, has been replaced by the new sin, breathing, because that will surely boil us all alive in the hot excrement of expelled CO2 molecules.

How long do Ice Ages last, inquiring minds want to know:

“Many glacial advances and retreats have occurred over the course of Earth’s history. These glaciations are not randomly distributed in time, but are concentrated into five intervals. Two very long and important intervals of glaciation occurred during the preCambrian, between about 2.4 and 2.1 billion years ago (the Huronian Ice Age) and again between about 850 and 630 million years ago (Cryogenian Ice Age). Glaciation was so extensive during these intervals that ice may have covered most, if not all, of the Earth’s surface, producing a “Snowball”, or at least a “Slushball”, Earth. Somewhat less extensive glaciations occurred during portions of the Ordovician and Silurian (Andean-Saharan Ice Age, between about 460 and 420 million years ago), followed by a much longer and more extensive series of glaciations during the Karoo Ice Age in the Pennsylvanian and Permian (360-260 million years ago). Finally, the late Cenozoic, or Quaternary, Ice Age began roughly 2.58 million years ago, at the start of the Pliocene, and continues through today.”

Notice how ice ages last tens of millions of years, and our current ice age is only 2.6 million years old. It took the earth 50 million years to cool, do you think a slight change in a trace gas could even have a remote chance of changing that?

    • Jim Steele is an ecologist/environmentalist/scientist from out there in California.

See what he has to say, it’s a good idea.

The last ice age is still melting and the oceans continue to rise incrementally.

The California coastline is always subject to earth slump and ocean degradation, it sometimes falls and collapses into Pacific Ocean shores.

East of the Sequoias, California is much like the rest of the north American continent west of the Mississippi.

  5. Gore doesn’t drive an Escalade. That was probably paid product placement in the film.

I’m thinking G Wagon. Or Hummer.

The MacBook Pro was probably his. Gore has been on the Apple board going back at least that far.

  6. As usual it’s all about the money. The lower and lower BAC allowable just gets more people in trouble and the otherwise law abiding are shaken down for thousands once the DUI charge is handed down. Meanwhile, the scofflaws, unlicensed, undocumented, un whatever skate along without consequence.

Neighbors niece killed by a hit and run drunk driver, they did catch her, a three time DUI now with a hit and run death- the penalty was three years in the clink.

So, they are not serious about this they just want the revenue.

    • And precisely what is wrong with being a scofflaw and exercising your right to drive without a license and/or insurance? It may be brave and foolish, but it is also admirable and honorable.

And for all the motorway tyranny, the so called drunk driving “laws” (DUI, DWI, open container, ad nauseum), as you correctly note, the problems are still caused by the same people- the scum elitists would have you believe that buzzed driving is drunk driving, that one drink is too many, and that the legal limit has steadily dropped from .1 or more to .08 or .05 or nothing, and still nearly every actual drunk driving incident has the killer sporting a blood alcohol level of .2, .3, .4, or STDAH (sufficient to down a horse).

Screw them all. Get your outlaw on.

      • Speaking of scofflaws, I’m coming up in two years expired tags on the Harley license, also done paying yearly tags on the 91 truck it’s now got a “collector vehicle” plate (one time fee) the do’s and don’ts list came with the plate “not for trucks hauling loads blah blah blah … first run was with a full bed of trash to the local dump station. F’ em’ indeed.

  7. What’s coming: more unwanted glitchy, broken half the time software……. And that is even before the creepy big brother aspects of it all.

    • Anything to arouse emotional response in terrified herd of abused cattle.

From every angle at all times. It almost seems as if a machine has been choreographing this entire s show for more than a decade. The way people scurry off to hide behind corpo security and actually do nothing but spread machine issued dictums. Like everything must be preapproved by authorized machine intelligence.

So. . . Is “they” a shady cabal of evil degenerate psychopathy or a semi clever frankenchine gone way outa control ? How are dumbed down animal fka human to figger it out?

Like ol B Hicks, Im serious!

      Unplug yourself!

  8. Being smarter than the average Bear means being Street Smart. Being Street Smart means a person recognizes they’re being conned very shortly after the con begins and does not participate.
Americans,,, who have been dumbed down and/or bought off lost any Street Smarts they might have had in prior times. This will cost them dearly in the near future.

  9. This would be my red line for sure, and many others that I associate with.
I doubt it will happen though.
It’s possible it could start with very lax setpoints to get everyone to buy in, and then tighten the screws later. But, as soon as my car or insurance company or whatever comments on my driving, the gloves are off.

    • Lizard quoted 129 a month. Flip side aka progressive 55 a month for same extortion. Bottom basic ripoff for retired driver using VIN under 6k miles a year.

      Shop carefully.

    • The deaths/injuries are way over exaggerated which will be obvious once their technology is online. They scam the numbers like they scam the covid numbers. Nobody knows anything because the data are compromised.

    • Parse these statements:

‘NHTSA’s notice said that the agency must be assured the technology works consistently before it can require it, and then give automakers at least three years to implement it once it finalizes the rules.

“We are trying to see, can we get it done, does the technology exist in a way that is going to work every time,” said Ann Carlson, the acting NHTSA administrator, adding that public acceptance of the technology would depend on its accuracy.

Carlson said there were close to 1bn daily driving journeys in the United States. “If it’s [only] 99.9% accurate, you could have a million false positives,” Carlson said. “Those false positives could be somebody trying to get to the hospital for an emergency.”

These official confabulators are blowing smoke. The earliest they could get this done is 2028, if ethanol sensors were on the shelf today. But they are not. And maybe never will be.

Ann Carlson, a native Californicator who got her legal degree from — wait for it — Hahhhhhvid, is full of shit. Bottoms up, bi-atch! You’ve got a face that could make a wild boar flee in panic.

    • Of course the Guardian (of the narrative) is a government controlled leftist propaganda pusher. They always give the proponents of these mandates airtime, but I did not see any quotes from a privacy advocate. How about interviewing someone who would warn about an ever encroaching big brother in your car with you? Also, no comment section? I wonder why? They can’t let people know what the majority of people think about this BS.

    • I really like Star Talk with Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice. I like it until they start talking the global warming bullshit. Still don’t understand how people who are supposedly analytical and science minded can fall for the hoax. Ditto XKCD by Randall Monroe (you’re a fellow nerd if you know xkcd). Ditto the covid hoax.

      • Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a Leftist who spent a lot of years in schools becoming lazy and incurious. He was also well-trained on conflating things asserted by those who purport to be scientific authorities with facts vetted and determined as a result of the rigorous application of the scientific method.

His success has been dependent on saying what the regime (i.e. PBS, the Hayden Planetarium, et al) wants him to say. He knows not to go anywhere near climate heresy, as he would be dumped back into obscurity. At that point he would have no other option but to try to peddle his astrophysicist “skills” to the free market, which has no interest.

It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it. -Upton Sinclair

Also, and perhaps more important, he’s been criminally compromised. This is the best way to ensure servitude. Unless he promotes the regime talking points, he’s screwed and may end up getting charged with rape. From Wiki:

        Sexual misconduct allegations

During November and December 2018, accusations of sexual misconduct were made against Tyson by four women.[117][118][119] Thchiya Amet El Maat accused Tyson of drugging and raping her while both were graduate students at UT Austin in 1984.[120] Katelyn Allers, a professor at Bucknell University, alleged Tyson touched her inappropriately at a 2009 American Astronomical Society gathering.[121][122] Ashley Watson, Tyson’s assistant on Cosmos, alleged Tyson made inappropriate sexual advances to her in 2018 which led her to resign from the position days later.[121][122] In what Tyson described as a Native American handshake, he held her hand and looked her in the eye for ten seconds. When she left, he told her he wanted to hug her but would rather not in case he wanted more.[123] A fourth anonymous woman alleged Tyson made inappropriate comments to her during a 2010 holiday party at the American Museum of Natural History.[117] Tyson denied El Maat’s rape accusation, while corroborating the basic facts around the situation of Allers and Watson’s assertions, but claimed his actions were misinterpreted and apologized for any misunderstanding or offense.[124][125][126]

Fox, National Geographic, the Museum of Natural History, and the producers of Cosmos announced investigations, which Tyson stated that he welcomed.[127] The National Geographic Channel announced on January 3, 2019, that they were putting further episodes of StarTalk on hiatus so as “to allow the investigation to occur unimpeded”.[128][129] The premiere of Cosmos: Possible Worlds, initially scheduled for March 3, 2019, was also delayed while the investigation continued.[130] On March 15, 2019, both National Geographic and Fox announced that: “The investigation is complete, and we are moving forward with both StarTalk and Cosmos,” and that: “There will be no further comment.” The networks affirmed that both StarTalk and Cosmos would resume, but that no date had been set.[131] In July, the American Museum of Natural History stated Neil deGrasse Tyson would keep his job as director of the Hayden Planetarium.[123]

        • Hi Mister,

          Interesting stuff!

Also interesting (to me, at any rate) is the way a Leftist with a degree in “x” becomes an expert in a field outside that he got his degree in. For example, Bill Nye – the “science” guy. My understanding is he has a BA in engineering. Yet he pontificates constantly about “climate change” and is taken as “expert” in the field.

  10. I’ll smile and wave from my old reliable non computerized 4 speed fun-mobile to all the dupes stuck on the side of the road due to being impaired humans.

Will govco vehicles also include this same tech? I wonder if it will detect ‘roids? Would be a shame if all of the tatted up ‘roid raging brutes were sidelined too.

    • Ah, the good old days of television and movies where government authority was rightly mocked. Won’t see that today. I laugh at all of the hundreds of FBI shows on TV where the always diverse cast is made up of good looking, noble, intelligent public servants doing the best they can to make the world a better place. What a load of crap.

    • Before he passed, Hugh Wilson managed to produce a “WKRP” DVD box set which was roughly 95% complete in terms of music licensing.

My favorite Hessman physical comedy on the series is still Johnny on the run from the “phone cops”.

I worked as a “phone cop” for a decade. We loved Johnny Fever at Phone Cop HQ.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTPzTG1Lx60

BTW, Hessman was a *real* album oriented format DJ going back to the early days.

  11. What will the government do if this technology that’s coming should result in mass deaths due to, say, a wreck caused by the thing or something else? Will they completely ignore it and/ or try to gaslight people into thinking something else caused those deaths? After all, they’ve either completely ignored the excess deaths of the past going on 3 years that were likely caused by the “Safe & effective COVID jabs” or they tried to make people think those excess deaths were from COVID, climate change, or whatever else they think people will uncritically accept.

  12. “My Uncle has a country place – that no-one knows about…”

The auto industry has jumped the shark. There are no serious people left in the executive ranks. All testosterone has left the industry.

“Don’t upset our unelected busybodies” seems to be their new mantra.

These “testes insecure” leaders seem to completely discount the average new vehicle transaction price as a percentage of median income vs time as some wild conspiracy theory.

Plotting this chart out shows something truly “unsustainable” to quote a a word the enemy loves to throw around.

They can’t see what’s staring them right on the face.

To quote EP: Fish heads for them all.

    • Hi Blake,

Yup. I think part of the reason why has to do with CEOs such as Barra being – essentially – Marie Antoinette types in that they are utterly disconnected from and contemptuous of the average person. Barra takes in $20 million or thereabouts annually. In one month, this woman takes in more than the most people will ever be worth – after a lifetime of working. What is a $50,000 EV to someone like her? It is akin to what buying a Snickers bar is to us.

    • In fact, all testosterone has left American business. So far it has survived on guys like me who left and provided the same services without the BS, but now they are trying to extend their tyranny to outside contractors too. Thank god I have options and can get out.

  13. Big Brother is infallible and all-powerful. Every success, every achievement, every victory, every scientific discovery, all knowledge, all wisdom, all happiness, all virtue, are held to issue directly from his leadership and inspiration. Nobody has ever seen Big Brother. He is a face on the hoardings, a voice on the telescreen. We may be reasonably sure that he will never die, and there is already considerable uncertainty as to when he was born. Big Brother is the guise in which the Party chooses to exhibit itself to the world.

  14. Just wait until these things get enough examples out in the wild to start gathering real statistics. Then watch as the various studies show that an overabundance of certain individuals who shall not be judged by the content of their character tend to do the majority of impaired driving. Will the programmers have to adjust their software to account for “cultural differences?” Will the rest of us have to drive gelded bumper cars to make us all equal, Harrison Bergeron style?

    • I suspect .gov will require require Eric’s readers to drink heavily or consume narcotics so as to be as dumb as the general public. It’s the new Harrison Bergeron thing.

    • ‘Will the programmers have to adjust their software to account for “cultural differences?’ — RK

What they will have to do is grapple with the intractable problem of false positives and false negatives.

At a distance, breath-based sensors are not very accurate — too much diffusion on the way. Aim an air vent at your mouf, turn the fan on high, and the BAC estimate drops like a stone.

Say DADDS throws a 0.075 BAC estimate, with a 95% confidence error band of 0.05 to 0.10. What does the algorithm do? Shut them all down, even though nearly two-thirds of them are below 0.08 BAC? Or let them all off the hook, despite about a third of them being over the arbitrary limit?

In the latter case, if the punter at 0.10 BAC causes a fatal wreck, is the auto mfr liable? This whole situation is a mess and a minefield. Big Gov should butt out. (As if.)

      • Of course the system will be hacked, and as you imply it won’t require access to the source code, just some stupid mod that isn’t anticipated by the engineers because the concept would be way outside of norms. Imagine someone putting a respirator mask on that filters out telltale traces of substance. That works both ways. Does anyone anticipate this scenario? Should they?

I’m amazed at what people will resort to in order to circumvent the law.

        • ‘I’m amazed at what people will resort to in order to circumvent the law.’ — RK

I once taped a color-matched square of paper over the last character (a letter) of my license plate … then joy-rode through NYC, beating tolls, blowing through speed cameras, and ignoring no-turn signs. Yeehaw!

          • “You know, a D turns into a B so easily. You just got greedy.” – Homer Simpson after seeing Bart’s doctored report card.

          • Indeed, I have it on very good authority that enough mud on a license plate will defeat the optical toll readers on toll roads. It’s a shame, our rightful masters could be so much more generous to their sycophants if everybody just paid “their fair share”(tm)

              • Yes. Before, you could depend on minimum-wage drudges not to search the license plate database, looking for possible matches between your vehicle model and an obscured plate number. No longer. Even the fake temporary plate gambit is getting risky.

              • Hi Philo,

Awful – and scary. People who lived through the Depression sometimes came out of it with a life-long fear of (and hatred for) bankers. I feel the same about computers – and “technology.” It’s long past-due we had a Butlerian Jihad.

      • “In the latter case, if the punter at 0.10 BAC causes a fatal wreck, is the auto mfr liable?” The answer, of course is yes. They’ll then use the verdict as a pretext to attempt to intrude even more. Failure is the mother’s milk of big government.

  15. General Motors CEO: Anti-drunken driving tech is coming. — eric, quoting Automotive News

    Read between the lines:

“We’re going to call on everyone — our advocate partners, academics and innovators in the technology space,” Polly Trottenberg, deputy secretary at the U.S. Transportation Department, said Tuesday. “Please bring us your best ideas, your research. Let’s join together to advance as quickly as we can the next technology in impaired driving prevention.”

The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety will feature a breath- and touch-based system to measure a driver’s blood alcohol level. Breath technology is undergoing trial deployments with states and private fleet companies. The time frame for a touch sensor that can measure blood alcohol levels is “still to be determined.” — Automotive News

    https://archive.ph/bhCqi#selection-7191.0-7191.351

Look up the three papers pertaining to DADDS from the 27th ESV Conference in Yokohama this spring, and you’ll find exactly what ‘Polly Trottenberg’ alludes to: research. Basic research into ethanol detection. Not product specs, which remain years away.

What they also conceal is that the breath technology under test pertains to fleet drivers, where zero (0.00%) BAC is the legal standard. Detecting any ethanol in the air is a much easier challenge than estimating its concentration.

DADDS systems are not going to make it into 2026 models. Indeed, they may never become accurate enough for general use. Our rulers’ bad intent is clear. But their ability to deliver this new nanny tech is lacking, as the abject begging and wheedling of ‘Polly Trottenberg’ makes all too apparent.

Libtard Demonrat ‘Polly,’ a graduate of — you guessed it! — Hahhhhhhvid’s Kennedy School of Government, after getting a BA in History — can kiss my ass. If elected president, I will order a fart detector installed in her manky old office, before summarily firing her ass. Sheesh!

  16. Will the car just stop in the middle of the road a la brake assist? Or, will it pull over? If it pulls over there will be Mail Box Avoidance Technology as part of the program? Or, will it know if the shoulder can accommodate a vehicle?

The other day I was being followed by an AGW and looked at the edge of the two-lane I was on. Had I been forced to pull over I’d have had to go a distance before the shoulder didn’t have a 45 degree slope a couple feet off the pavement. Granted, it didn’t go down far, maybe 4-5 feet. But, imagine the madcap merriment that will ensue when your top heavy SUV gets on a tilt like that.

Once the word gets to the masses on this new tech the auto industry should fold like a cheap suit…just as the Watermelons want.

    • What if there is NO shoulder, which is not uncommon on two lane blacktop? Will it pull you over into the ditch, or stop you in the middle of the road? Law suits incoming.

    • Back when I worked outside on US34 between Granby and Grand Lake, the road was built up about 5 feet or so, and the pole lines were set back about 25 feet. This was so the snow could be pushed down off the road and out of the way without making a snow canyon. Worked great, but at least once a year I’d get a call to run up and pull a coworker out of the ditch. The snow was so deep it was level with the road, so naturally when someone (a contractor or someone from Vail or Steamboat who didn’t normally work in Grand County) would pull over to connect a customer their truck would sink into the snow, which was at the same height as the road. Since I had the bucket with a winch I got the call. Great fun. These days the boys would have to call fleet and have a tow company come out, pretty much ending their work for the day.
