When the federal government saves you money, get ready to pay through the nose for it.

As for example “record high” fuel economy, which the government takes credit for delivering unto us via regulations that the car companies must find ways to comply with.

And they do.

It’s why the average cost of a new car has gone up to just shy of $50,000 – an increase of  about $15,000 vs. as recently as three years ago. The reason why has to do with what happened about three years ago:

Orange Man out. Biden Thing in.

The latter promised he’d save us gas money by making us pay more for cars that burn less (or even none). He never said the last part – about paying more for the cars – out loud. Instead, the Thing’s minions, such as EPA Administrator Michael Regan say “historic progress” has been made.

He refers to the 1.2 MPG uptick posted by new cars (on average) in 2022.

The bulk of this historic progress has been made by replacing less expensive but larger engines – such as V6 engines – with smaller, more expensive turbocharged four cylinder engines. And by pairing these with less reliable, more expensive to replace automatics transmissions with two and sometimes three overdrive gears. And by adding “technology” that shuts off the engine at every red light that adds expense in the form of shorter battery and starter motor life.

The most progress of all, however,  has been made by using the regs to stealth-force the mass-production of battery powered devices, which are credited (by the government) with being “zero emissions” vehicles and with delivering 2-3 times the MPG equivalent of the gas-burning cars the regs are stealth-forcing out of production.

For example, a battery powered device such as the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt is credited by the government with delivering “120 MPGe.” This being as oilily disingenuous as the government’s characterization of drugs that didn’t prevent people from becoming infected with (or infecting others with) COVID as “vaccines.”

“MPGe” gives a similarly false impression of a battery powered device’s efficiency by not factoring into the equation the inefficiencies of generating and transmitting electricity to the device. If these were honestly factored, the “MPGe” would be much closer to the MPG figures of cars that aren’t devices.

But this gaming doesn’t matter to the government – because it furthers the agenda of the government. Or – rather – the Things that control it. They use it to stealth-force the car companies to produce “zero emissions” vehicles that are credited by the government with  returning 2-3 times the mileage equivalent, even though they don’t actually deliver it.

But the credit helps the average.

The more “123 MPGe” Bolts Chevy produces relative to 17 MPG Tahoes, the more credit Chevy gets – in terms of complying with the regulations that require its fleet (i.e., all the models it produces) to average close to 35 MPG – which is the current MPG minimum mandated by the government, to save us money.

But Bolts don’t sell.

Or rather, they cost GM more to produce than can be earned back by selling them at a price that would cover the cost to produce them, plus a reasonable profit on the transaction. So Chevy sells them at a loss – and makes up for it by increasing the cost of vehicles like the Tahoe, that are (unlike the Bolt) appealing enough that enough people  are willing to pay what it costs to produce them – plus the cost of producing Bolts and other devices that are only being produced in order to comply with the regs.

The base price of a new Tahoe is now more than $50,000 ($52,600 to be precise). When it goes up to $60,000, how many who’d like one will still be able to afford one?

A new Toyota Camry – shorn of the V6 it used to be available with – will cost you close to $30,000 now, as opposed to $26,320 before. The roughly $4k more the government will force you to spend for the new (and take-it-or-leave it) hybrid drivetrain is the price you pay for the government saving you gas money.

There’s more savings on deck, too.

A Reuters news story blandly notes that “Fuel economy is forecast to increase to 26.9 mpg in 2023.” In fact, government regulatory pressure is about to increase – to just shy of 50 MPG -and that is going to necessitate factoring more MPGe into the mix. That is, the production of more “zero emissions” devices in order to comply with the regs.

Since these won’t sell, it’ll cost you more to buy what you want.

The EPA said EVs, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell production rose to 7 percent in 2022 and are projected to hit 12 percent in 2023.”

Italics added. Production, yes. How about sales?

How about costs?

The EPA has “proposed sweeping emissions cuts for new vehicles through 2032, including a 56 percent reduction in projected fleet average emissions over 2026 requirements that it says would result in 67 percent of new vehicles by 2032 being electric.”

Italics added. Proposed – in the context of government – being akin to the way government asks us to contribute to Social Security. And yes, it will result in just what the Reuters story says it will.

Speaking of “zero emissions” . . .

The Biden Thing’s plenipotentiary Michael Regan says that all of this “historic progress” has also “reduce(d) climate pollution and other harmful emissions.” Another oily misdirection. How is the “climate” polluted by the gas that plants must have to live – and which produce the gas we need to breath?

Regan conflates these life-giving gasses – without which the environment would be lifeless – with “harmful emissions” so as to to create the false association that they are just that. 

In order to get us to accept having to pay for the costs of all these savings.   

And you can’t take that to the bank.

    These violations have nothing to do with actual pollution. Warehouses are being punished for failing to pay the vig for green energy grift.

  5. Thanks to the government, my 2018 ford focus will have to go the shop to clean the carbon buildup from the fuel injectors. Since the car has direct rather than port injection, which it likely wouldn’t have had, if it wasn’t for Uncle Sam. Whatever tiny fuel “savings” with direct rather than port injection will be eaten up by the bill for cleaning something that shouldn’t have ever been.

    BTW, the car is at 38,000 miles so it will happen again over the life of this car. Thank you very little Uncle Sam.

    • Rich, make sure you’re not getting ripped off. I have a 2012 Focus with DFI that just turned 202,000 miles and a ’16 with 65k. The injectors have never been touched. “Carbon fouling” on DFI engines usually happens in the intake valves, not the injectors. My valves have never been touched, either…

    • This concerns me, seems the newer fuel injection is now “direct” and with that, several thousand PSI pump and plumbing to make it work. Then how LONG will it work? This is a whole different world than port fuel injection at 50 – 60 PSI. It better be perfect on install or repair since a 2000 plus PSI leak is catastrophic.

      Then your issue, the carbon buildup requiring maintenance $$ not needed in a port system. Thanks Uncle Scam.

How’s about a press conference showing the huge reduction in pollution from cars over the decades and how this latest push for mileage and emissions is chasing a sliver of improvement, if that, for huge amounts of money.   7. Car prices are going up exponentially. So what is the difference if the government stole all of your money or made car prices go up like they are now? The net effect is the same.

    It is grand theft auto money. We all need cars and they are making them impossible to own.

    I think balancing the budget and stopping war should be a priority, because deficit spending is making us all bankrupt.

    You all do know the Federal Reserve has two charters, one of which is price stability (the other is full employment). When the Fed was created, gold was $20.67 Now it is 2,000 per oz.

    I am declaring the Fed a failure, it did NOT provide price stability, it was the engine that caused price stability to fail.

    The Fed caused hyperinflation and endless war with endless deficit spending.

        • They only poll a few dozen people at most to compute that approval percentage. And they use loaded questions like “If the election were held today would you be Highly likely, somewhat likely, not very likely, unlikely, or very unlikely to vote for Joe Biden? Because they don’t ask about who he’d be running against, there’s a bias to the devil you know.

          And remember that about 20% of the population works for government, or a government contractor, or some entity that’s in bed with the government. They’re not going to vote against their wallet.

    EV’s are less efficient then ice powered vehicles….so pollute more…

    Also mining the materials for EV’s and the manufacturing process for EV’s causes far more pollution then manufacturing ice powered vehicles.

    Ice vehicles can be recycled…EV recycling is an ecological catastrophe looming….

    EV’s are also more expensive to buy and maintain and have far less utility….

    Conclusion (coming back to reality as it is calculated): based on the fossil fuels used for both cars calculated efficiency for a 5 years old EV is 0.14 at the cold winter or hot summer vs. Gas-powered Car new or 12 years used and at any seasons “well to wheel” efficiency is 0 .20 – 0.30 (Wikipedia)

    • It is very difficult to extinguish EV battery fires even with an entire ocean. There is a video, Tesla Burns in Submarine mode, showing an EV that caught fire while launching a boat and continues burning despite being submerged in the ocean.

      EV battery batteries burn at much higher temperatures. The high temperature can melt steel and burn through concrete. Burning batteries emit toxic gases that can injure, kill, and explode. There are videos explaining EV hazards by analyzing the Luton Airport car park fire & collapse with 1500 cars, Felicity Ace cargo ship with 4000 new cars fire & sinking, and Freemantle Hwy cargo ship with 3750 new car fire.

      In Norway over 2 years ago a ferry sunk as a result of a Tesla fire so the ferry company banned electric cars

      In China there are plenty of videos even though the gov’t tries to suppress those…lots of cameras to watch everyone plus all the cell phones.Particularly worrisome are the cheap E bikes…charging in hall ways in apartments can lead to the whole block going up….in most states EV’s are banned from under ground parking and it wouldn’t be surprising to see insurance rates rocket on EV’s.

      Most fire depts just let them burn out as they don’t have the tech or amount of water to do much.Sure the battery tech will eventually improve to reduce this issue but thats probably 2-3 decades away or more from being available in mass.

      An ICE vehicle burns at about 600°C and, in most cases, can be put out with a garden hose.
      A lithium-ion vehicle battery burns at about 2000°C and can only be safely put out with full immersion in salt water. That’s hot enough to melt steel ! All it takes to cause a catastrophe is one faulty battery cell and most of them are made in China.

      UK Insurance companies are not insuring EVS or have EVS have substantially higher insurance premiums because of their high repair cost. EVs older than 1 year old are being written off with very minor damage compared to an ICE vehicle because of the high cost to replace a battery.

      Heavier EVs require more frequent tire replacement and produce more tire pollution.
      ATTENTION….Tire particles/km is 1850 times worse than from exhausts.

      Road and bridges require extra maintenance and design capacity from the extra weight of EV batteries.

      Rapid depreciation and numerous EV problems that most people are already aware of in using a car in a large country with weather that has extremely low and high temperatures.

    Most news about renewables report the capacity, not actual production. The capacity is also referred to a “nameplate capacity,” or the maximum output the source is capable of producing. In a properly designed solar installation it will only happen for a few months between 10:00 and 14:00 local time, for example. Wind actual production is usually much worse and of course much harder to predict.

    As there’s a direct financial incentive to lie, of course the producers of this equipment are going to overpromise. And as long as the renewables are a minor percentage of supply the ISO engineers will be able to compensate. But what happens when the renewables crowd out the reliables? When there’s not enough on-demand supply to make up for shortfalls due to weather (such as most of December when wind and sun are minimal), what then?

    Of course there’s the unseen of malinvestment too. What might have been brought with the capital used for all those wind farms? A few well placed and modern nuclear power stations would supply more than enough on-demand and carbon neutral electricity for decades. But that would mean we could have plenty without the sackcloth and ashes routine. Mother Gaia won’t put up with human flourishing, so back to cold, dark and dead for you.

    • The info at the local PSE wind farm visitor center flat out states this only works with the grid, smoothly, due to the adjacent hydro power from the Columbia River dams. The erratic wind is compensated by the ability to quickly adjust the hydro generators as needed.

      • That’s the exception. The overwhelming majority aren’t coordinated at all, have no storage and the only backup is what used to be called a natural gas peaking plant. And the ISO is required to take renewable power even if it isn’t needed, so that drives out baseload operators. The real reason why coal and nuclear plants are being taken offline is because they aren’t designed for demand following.

        I agree that if there were some amount of coordination with the Bureau of Reclamation and other dam operators, intermittency would be compensated. But BofR’s priority isn’t generating electricity, it’s maintaining downriver flows. And besides, if they shut down the powerhouse they lose revenue too.

    • Wind turbines? They require the grid or separate power source to start the blades turning. Most of the time there is no wind or too much wind where the blades have to feather to prevent destruction. The amount of power they supply is negligible.

      Solar? Right off the bat you lose over half a day when going from day to twilight to dark. Production is mostly from 9 to 4pm peaking at 11 to 2 pm. One needs batteries to make the night. Many, many batteries. It takes me 16- 6 volt batteries to make the night. The Trojan (RE) batteries are good for about 7-10 years before needing replacement. Think how many batteries will be needed to power a city! Then think they need replaced every ten years. Then think they are made of plastic which is derived from oil.

      Nukes? Okay if you don’t mind the radiation leaks and meltdowns every so often. I wouldn’t live near one and if I did I’d stay upwind as much as possible.

      Oil/Gas/Coal? Plants last many years,,, oil/gas recovery is cheap,,, oil/gas/coal is renewed by mother earth. Now it seems to me that since oil/gas/coal is a product of the earth it would be considered green but alas…. no. it is considered dirty and a threat to the planet that made it. We have coal fired plants that are pretty damn clean. Do we want to use them…. NOoooooo! Why? Because it leaves our hands black when handled. And without oil/gas/coal there be no steel.

      And lastly,,, have you seen any smog lately? I doubt it. We have very little industry and what industry is here has cleaned up their act.

      Then one has to wonder why so many wealthy not so elite buy millions of shares into these dirty “fossil” fuels. Well, for the same reason these same not so elite buy property on the coasts they claim will be flooded by climate change aka Global Warming… a term so broad it cannot be nailed down.

      Gasoline cars are so clean they had to pick on natural atmospheric gasses that make life possible on our little blue planet. Too much CO2 increases global warming they say… not true according to actual testing. The same for Nitrogen and Nox is not harmful.

      Well then what are they doing? Well ‘they’ know that without cheap power human life cannot exist in the present numbers. So, it’s a depopulation method like the covid vaxxine misspelled to indicate it is not a vaccine but rather it is yet another depopulation method. Not only does it kill outright but it causes abortive births, sterilization and an array of illnesses and cancer which is why they are vaxxinating children. Two generations of sterile children that survive the vaxx is all they need to reduce population by two thirds or more.

      I suggest people hip up a little. They have a stove now that connects to wifi,,, a refrig,,, a hot water heater and air conditioner that does the same. If not stopped they are going to put the plebs that are left back in the stone age.

    Its good in a way the Rs are showing their true cowardice now, for everyone to see. May there be no illusions going into next year, our government is riddled with monsters. Elections are absolutely worthless at this point. Our best hope is a quick and resounding defeat of the Petrol-Dollar along with our fake and gay military that enforces it.

  12. I realize there’s trepidation here about Vivek Ramaswamy, but he held an event at a large truck stop in Iowa yesterday along with a Q&A with professional drivers. The common thread among those drivers was the federal overreach e.g. electronic logs, Tesla style throttling of power, the improper vetting of Mexican drivers/equipment.

    He calls for the elimination of the EPA. To my knowledge is the only one who flat out says climate change is a hoax. Even Orange Man (who I voted for twice) doesn’t say as much.

  14. Anyone remember that train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio earlier this year? That train released who knows how much hazardous chemicals into the environment, not to mention the local water supplies and rivers, resulting in who knows how much environmental damage. The Highwire did a report on that months ago and even interviewed some disaster response experts.   15. Let me get this straight. If they car companies don’t meet the mileage demands they have to pay a cash penalty that will be added on to the cost of ICE cars. But, since they lose money on EV’s they have to add to the price of ICE cars to make up for the loss.

    Why don’t they just ditch the EV’s and end the stupidity we’re having to pay for anyway? It would then become more obvious as to WHY cars cost more, because GovCo and its Enviro Zealots demand you pay a penance for defiling their god. Just add a line item on the sticker that says GovCo Mandated Environmental Tithe and be done with it. Let people know why they are being screwed and by whom.
