Reader Question: Classic Cop Car?

Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply!

Mark asks: I recently saw two Crown Vic Police Interceptors for sale locally. I don’t think they’d been used for patrol and maybe not even used by the PD but, rather, the Planning and Zoning department or some other agency. I didn’t grab one ($4,500-5k) because I just don’t have the room, already having nine other cars. What do you think about these, however, as the “classic” daily driver? Thanks and keep up the good work.

My reply: I think there’s a a good reason AGWs pick them for their daily drivers. Several good reasons.

These are full-size, rear-drive cars with a fairly straightforward V8 and a very straightforward four speed OD automatic transmission. Ford built the same basic car for decades. They are extremely dependable, rugged and long-lived cars whose drivetrains can be economically rebuilt to keep the car going for 500,000-plus miles. Parts are abundant and inexpensive. They even get decent gas mileage. If you wanted to, you can also convert them to dual fuel (gas-CNG) easily as this was a factory available option for a number of years.

Built like tanks, they can take a hit.

Taxi drivers love these cars for the same reasons cops do.

The ones in service were also likely serviced regularly, on a schedule. This is usual for fleet vehicles and is invaluable to the next owner.

If the price is right, I’d buy one in a minute for the purposes you have in mind.

  1. The only drawback I can think of on these cars is the operating conditions they usually go through during their short stints as “service” vehicles. Long periods of idling and bursts of heavy use is not good on an engine/drive train.
