Reader Question: Mustang II?

Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply!

Mike asks: I caught your lengthy reply to the guy who asked about old Trans-Ams and am wondering what you think about the Mustang II?

My reply: Given the potential these cars have – and given their low prices relative to the prior (and later) more popular and stronger fro the factory Mustangs, I think they are a great way to get a classic car – and fast car – without spending a fortune. Yes, they were weak as they came. But they came with the same Ford small block V8 (models so equipped, like the Cobra II) as the Mustangs of the ’60s and can be made just as strong – and the car will go faster because it’s lighter.

There’s a Pontiac analog here. Many people make fun of the last GTO – the ’74 model, which was based on the compact Ventura rather than the LeMans or Grand Prix, as in the prior couple of years – and because it came with a 350 cubic inch V8 rather than a 400 or 455.

But the ’74 was actually almost as quick as some of the early GTOs because it was a smaller/lighter car. And the 350 Pontiac could be hopped up just as readily as a 400 or 455 and using many of the same parts.

The more “desirable” early GTOs cost a fortune – the ’74 doesn’t. Which makes it desirable, in my book.

I feel the same way about the Mustang II.
