I recently got a food dehydrator (from Gander Mountain; see here: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=401747&pdesc=Open_Country_Food_Dehydrator_Jerky_Maker&aID=503AJ1&merchID=4006 ) to make my own beef jerky and other good stuff.

These things are really neat. If you like jerky, you've gotta try making your own. When you use your own (fresher) meat, your own seasoning (to your own tastes) the results are so much better than store-bought. And the stuff you make is free of sodium nitrate and other bad-for-you chemicals that come in most store-bought jerky.

You can also make dried fruit/fruit rolls, ideal of long-term storage.

A dehydrator is fun to have in good times but could also be an important tool in the event Things Go Bad.

I recommend getting one...

PS: The model I got is made in America and supports American workers.

Good deal. That is probably one of the few things at Gander Mountain that is made in America.
