I always see the Dot 3 and Dot 4 fluid on the racks and Walmart when I am shopping. I think all of my vehicles take Dot 3, but what is the difference between the two? If I was in a pinch would I be able to substitute one for the other?

You can mix Dot 3 with Dot 4, or even use 100% Dot 4 for what's designed for Dot 3, but never mix either with Dot 5.

But it is not be a good idea to mix Dot 3 with Dot 4 or use Dot 3 when the brake system is designed for Dot 4.

Dot 4 has a slightly higher boiling point than Dot 3 and therefore should not be used or mixed if the vehicle is designed for Dot 4.
