Anybody have ideas/suggestions on the best tool for this job?

I have a pulley on my 4Runner I am going to need to hold tight while I torque it down to 250lbs.

In the absence of a better suggestion I would drop the sump and wedge the crank with a baulk of soft timber.

That is a lot of work! I'll slam it with an impact and some loctite before I do that.

Shoot, I might just do what I said!

When I was in graduate school I had a girl friend that might have been able to take that off with her lips.

Isn't this what the rope trick is for? spark plug out, rope into the cylinder to keep the engine from turning? I've never done it, but I've heard of it.

I was thinking rope too, but around the crank pulley with a bar or something attached.

The rope trick is how you replace the valve seals without pulling the cylinder head.

Are you sure you need to torque it to 250 ft. lbs??????? That's the kind of torque you put on suspension and driveline components. I've never seen one require that much torque on a crank pully/harmonic balancer. :eek::eek::eek:

I really, really think you ought to double check that setting. It might be newton meters or inch pounds. I just can't belive an engine part would have that much torque to tighten it. I suspect you may damage the crank if you torque it that tight.

I need to double check my information. I have it on my home computer. That does sound pretty damn tight though. I should just go to my buddy's shop and print out the All Data procedure and specs.

Just found some info on a 99 4runner on the Yota forum - that reckons the specified 217 ft lbs is the minimum to be used - reckons safer to go just a tad over. The guy advising the poster asking for info reckons he uses a 48" breaker bar to undo it.

Yeah, they ain't messing around on that bolt. That is a lot more than German tight for sure. I will post the procedure that I found when I find it on my home computer tonight.

Ahh I remember now... there are special tools to lock the ring gear/flywheel in place. Usually require removing the starter or other access to the flywheel. But 250ft-lbs is a lot to hold against.

My old ford 6 was only like 70ft-lbs. I just set the parking brake and had the car in gear.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, thermostat, all belts, all hoses, all done.

Just finished this project. Took a bit over a day to complete. I kept taking breaks and playing with my daughter. I'll post some pictures when I get them uploaded (of her helping). The two special tools did the trick. The crank pulley bolt took a breaker and a 4.5 foot bar!!! That shit was on there. Akiko had to hold the hood up higher so I could use the bar.

At least you got the important stuff done. (Playing with the kid.) I always keep an assortment of broomhandle and 2X2 pieces in varying lengths for holding hoods and such up. As for cheater pipes, I've got one that is an 8 foot driveshaft with the yokes cut off. I remember trying to get the lug nuts off a '47 Ford 1 1/2 ton truck and myself and the owner of the salvage yard I ran were both hanging on the 8 foot pipe bouncing to break the lug nuts loose. (Both of us were on the shady side of 200 pounds too.)

All that stuff 'growing' in there doesn't look good. Leaking water pump? Did you replace it while you were in there?

I was growing a little mineral farm algae looking thing in there! Ain't it pretty? Reminded me of coral reef. All of it came from the seep hole on the water pump.

Yes sir, I replaced everything in there with the exception of crank and cam seals (they looked good).

I did notice the belt had been changed before. Didn't seem like the pump ever was.
