2007 Pontiac G5

The G5 is Pontiac's new entry-level coupe, replacing the Sunfire. The front-wheel-drive G5 is available in one bodystyle and two trim levels, base and performance-themed GT. The base engine is a 2.2 liter, "Ecotec" four-cylinder rated at 148 horsepower; it is available with either a Getrag-sourced five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with "filled for life" fluid that never needs to be changed under normal operating conditions). The optional engine (in the GT) is a 173 horsepower, 2.4 liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing -- and the same two transmission choices. Both base and GT trim lines come standard with AC, power windows and door locks. However, ABS, traction control and side-impact air bags are optional on the base model. GT models come standard with a firmer riding FE3 suspension, ABS and 17-inch wheels, chrome exhaust tip and leather trimmed interior. Major options include a 7-speaker Pioneer stereo system, XM satellite radio, remote start and sunroof.

2007 Pontiac G6

For 2007, a 252 horsepower 3.6 liter V-6 (and new six-speed automatic transmission) becomes the standard drivetrain in GTP models (coupes and sedans) and head/curtain and side-impact air bags are now standard on the G6 coupe and sedan. There's also a revised rearview mirror with compass display. Base and GT models continue to be powered by a 224-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine. A 2.4-liter, 170-horsepower "Ecotec" four-cylinder powerplant is also available. Two of the G6 line's biggest attractions are the availability of a folding retractable hardtop (for the coupe) and a panorama-style, four-piece sliding glass roof for sedan models. These are unusual features in a modestly priced (under $30k) mid-sized vehicle and give the sporty, attractively styled G6 a leg up over less well-endowed competitors.

2007 Pontiac Grand Prix/GXP

The mid-size Grand Prix is one of the few "old" models in Pontiac's almost all-new lineup and is basically a carryover for 2007. Five new exterior colors are available, as are chrome-plated 17-inch wheels and a new standard tire pressure monitoring system. The Grand Prix shares its front-drive platform with the Buick LaCrosse and comes powered in its standard form by a 200-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 engine. The step-up GTP model offers a supercharged 3.8 that generates a brisk 260 horsepower and includes an enhanced traction control system. A four-speed, automatic transmission is included with both engines. Meanwhile, the range-topping GXP model comes with a potent 5.3-liter V-8 that generates 303 horsepower. This engine includes Active Fuel Management Technology, which enables it to sip up to 12 percent less fuel by deactivating half of the engine's cylinders when they're not needed, such as at cruising speeds. The four-speed automatic transmission used with the GXP is sport-calibrated and allows aggressive manual gear changes via Formula-One racing style "TAPShift" controls on the steering wheel. The GXP also has a firm-riding sport-tuned suspension, with StabiliTrak stability control included.

2007 Pontiac Solstice

Big news for '07 is the availability of a new high-performance GXP version of Pontiac's aggressively styled, rear-drive, two-seat roadster. The Solstice GXP comes standard with a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine rated at 260 horsepower. Also includes are GXP-specific 18-inch wheels with high-performance tires, GM's StabiliTrak stability control system, polished stainless steel dual exhaust tips, revised front and rear fascias and GXP-specific interior trim, including "GXP" embroidered sport buckets. Standard versions of the Solstice continue to be powered by the 2.4 liter, 177 horsepower "Ecotec" four-cylinder. Both versions of the Solstice come standard with a five-speed manual transmission -- with a five-speed automatic available optionally in both models as well. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard, with ABS available optionally. Though not as loaded in standard form as its cousin, the Saturn Sky, the Solstice does come with a CD stereo, rear defroster, an adjustable steering column -- and a considerably lower base price. A full range of options can be ordered, too -- including power locks, mirrors and windows, keyless entry, cruise control, leather seats, a Monsoon audio system, GM's OnStar communications/safety system and XM satellite radio.

2007 Pontiac Torrent

Introduced in 2006, the Pontiac Torrent is a compact front/all-wheel drive crossover sport-utility vehicle that shares platforms, powertrains, and other essential elements with the Chevrolet Equinox and, to a lesser degree, the Saturn VUE. Like the Equinox, the Torrent is one of the largest compact models available on the market. Its overall length of 189-inches means it's about as big as the mid-size Honda Pilot -- but with a longer wheelbase, which helps give it a "big car ride." Its styling is bold -- in keeping with Pontiac tradition -- and you'll find a decently powerful 3.4-liter V-6 engine under the hood. It produces 185 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. The only available gearbox is a five-speed automatic. The Torrent rides on MacPherson struts up front, with an independent four-link rear suspension with coil springs in the rear. Front-side airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control are available -- with the latter being offered only on front-wheel-drive models; ABS comes standard with AWD. One neat Torrent feature is a back seat that slides as much as eight inches fore and aft to maximize rear-passenger room or cargo space. Both the split rear seat and the front passenger seat can be folded flat to accommodate long objects, while a height-adjustable cargo panel can function as either a shelf, rear security cover, or a picnic table. For '07, the updates include revised audio systems with MP3 and satellite radio capability -- and GM's Stabiltrak stability system is now a standard feature on all trim levels, along with a tire pressure monitoring system.

2007 Pontiac Vibe

The Vibe compact crossover is mostly a carryover for 2007 -- with a new paint color (Wave Blue) added to the roster as well an available rear cargo cover. The Premium Monotone Appearance Package of '06 has been replaced by a slightly revised Premium Monotone Package. This consists of body-colored front and rear fascia extensions, side rocker extensions and two spoilers (one for the liftgate, the other for the roof). Available in both front- and all-wheel drive versions, the Vibe shares platforms and powertrains with the Toyota Matrix, including its standard (and Toyota-sourced) 130-horsepower 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine and a choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The top GT model is only available with front-wheel drive, but comes with a 180-horsepower version of the 1.8-liter engine and a six-speed manual transmission. This sporty version of the Vibe also gets upgraded brakes and alloy wheels. A dealer-installed supercharger for the top engine can be ordered too. It adds about 35 percent more horsepower and torque. Anti-lock brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, a navigation system, leather seats and GM's OnStar communications/safety system are optional.
