    Re: Reflections of a Mother

"In the FLDS society it is still 1840."

Which is an admission they're screwed up!

"However in our 21st century society many of the 14-yr old girls are sluts. I talked with one 12-yr old who bragged that she had bedded down with more than 30 men, not boys, but men."

So? That's a non sequitur. Again, you don't seem able to comprehend that pointing to a separate problem doesn't obviate the first, especially when the two are completely unrelated.

" To be married at 14 is more honorable than sleeping around. "

A 14 year old is a child - and not capable of giving consent. Even if the 14 year child is marrying another child, they are children - who have not yet developed their adult personalities, have no clue what their lives will be about, what their ambitions might be, etc. To assume the burdens and responsibilities of marriage at that age is asinine. It's donkey stupid that we're even debating this.

Not that I am arguing for underage girls marrying, but just for the argument, only in Ameirca, around the world girls marry alot younger than any of us would like to believe.

and to put the "Icing on the Cake": "...The Bible, which forms the basis of most morality in the Western world, pretty much sets the acceptable age of marriage for a girl at 13, although some readings put it at age 12 and a half,..."

"Interestingly enough, you can make a pretty strong case that girls that age* are actually better equipped to handle the physical rigors of pregnancy than even women in their 20s, let alone 30s or 40s. You can also make a case that by encouraging marriage late in life (10 or 20 years after menarche) we’re actually encouraging sex outside of marriage, by expecting sexually mature young adults to go without sex for one to two decades; even the apostle Paul, in the New Testament, suggests that that’s not wise thinking."

Yeah, just thought I would put a little fire in the argument to raise your blood pressures

Well, pointing to backwards Third World countries/peoples and saying, "look, they think it's ok!" is hardly much of an argument ...

"and to put the "Icing on the Cake": "...The Bible, which forms the basis of most morality in the Western world, pretty much sets the acceptable age of marriage for a girl at 13, although some readings put it at age 12 and a half,..."

The bible was written thousands of years ago; much of what it counsels is Bronze Age bullshit. Should we should burn witches, slay insolent teenagers? Etc?

It is also a commonly held but nonetheless false notion that the bible is the basis of "most morality in the Western world." In the first place, there's not much in the bible that's new in terms of either morality or ethics (the best bible ethics lesson, the "golden rule," far predates it) and in the second, Western civilization owes a greater debt to pagan Greece and Rome than it does the Judeo-Christian cult that appeared after both had been fully developed. There's more good sense in the 120 or so pages of "The "Meditations of Marcus Aurelius" than in the entire Old Testament; and it's a much more pleasant read, too.Rome, circa AD 100, was a more modern, learned - and humane - place than "Christian" Western Europe was 1,000 years later.

"Interestingly enough, you can make a pretty strong case that girls that age* are actually better equipped to handle the physical rigors of pregnancy than even women in their 20s, let alone 30s or 40s. "

So you are saying the fundamental purpose of girls is to serve as efficient reproductive tracts?

"You can also make a case that by encouraging marriage late in life (10 or 20 years after menarche) we’re actually encouraging sex outside of marriage, by expecting sexually mature young adults to go without sex for one to two decades; even the apostle Paul, in the New Testament, suggests that that’s not wise thinking."

I personally see nothing wrong with sex outside of marriage (between non-married people, that is). People need to experience life - and sex is a big part of it. The idea that a person should have sex with just one person prior to marriage is a silly notion that helps to foster this diseased, guilt-laden attitude toward sex that pervades our society.

This unhealthy obsession with sex is one of the Bible's true influences on the West....

A woman who respects herself will not permit a man to convince her that premartial sex is legitimate. Men have a higher sex drive than women have, but less of a drive to father children. Whereas women will feel empty, depressed and used after having sex without a commitment or the hope of bearing a child of her own. Women have tried to suppress this natural maternal instinct, but the trend of treating sex as sharing a cup of coffee is fine for men, but it is emotionally devastating for women.

People do not need to "practice" sex in order to become proficient. One of several problems in our country today are false notions about sex, other than tittering like a bunch of adolescences. Many people feel that there is something worse with them, or that they are doing "it" wrong because they are expecting more of a thrill than possible, but many start going further away from what is natural in search of a false euphoria.

Jill C. Manning, licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in research and clinical work related to pornography wrote, 'The truth is everything human beings need to learn about healthy sexuality can be learned without ever havingsexual relations outside of marriage or viewing pornography. . .A balanced life increases your attractiveness to other healthy people and communicates to others that you have respect for yourself and a love for life.'

The disease is not a guilt-laden attitude toward sex, but rather STD
