My 23 yr old daughter wants to purchase a 2007 Sky.
We live in Minneapolis, and I believe that this car would have it's problems - especially if we had considerable snow.
What do you guy's think?
It's a nice - but flawed - car. The interior layout is awful. For example, the switch for the power windows is so far back on the door panel that it is literally next to impossible to roll down the window while driving, or at the least, very awkward. The top seal is poor and the car is very drafty, with lots of wind noise above 50 mph.Originally Posted by dBrong

I've only been to St.Paul in the summer -- I've never been there in the winter.
But like Eric says, I'd be hard-pressed to pick a worse vehicle for that area of the country.
She might go look at a New Beetle convertible -- it's FWD, and German cars usually do really well in snow. Plus it's a classic 'Chick Car'.

With a proper set of winter tires, I don't see why a rwd sports car couldn't survive a Minnesota winter.
I don't understand why America still builds and sells such awful vehicles.
No reason at all if the roads are plowed. Given the low ground clearance of most "sporty" cars, they end up pushing snow if there is much on the roads. A limited slip differential helps, too.
I had the Miata for 14 winters and that as my experience.

I confess I haven't read an honest review of it, and I would think it better in ice than some cars...
Isn't it an Opel, or Daewoo, or Vauxhall... based on a Lotus, ...?
I personally really love the sky, and would love to have a redline.
having also experienced a miata in the winter, it is an awful idea unless you put snow tires on it.

Even with winter tires, a low-slung RWD sports car is not built for snow driving anymore than a 4x4 SUV is built for high-speed handling. Can it be done? Sure.
Is it a good idea?
That's another question... .
We're talking about a part of the country that attaches 6 foot bright red fiberglass rods to the fire hydrants, so they can be found in the winter.

No Lotus genes in this version. There is an Opel and Vauxhall version though. I think Jeremy Clarkson hated it.
I was referring to the generic snow plow characteristics, not price or country of origin.

I apologise for my disparging remark earlier aabout US manufactured cars.
I am about to go out in my LS1 sedan...
I had two sets of wheels and two sets of tires, the car was no fun with compromise rubber.
We just close roads when the weather goes like that...
admittedly it rarely goes under -10C... also we require vehicles to use tire-chains in snow, quite common in inland South Island, none of this messing with snow tires or intermediates.. watching 4WDs slliding on ice is surely the same world over?And 6'-deep would need to be graded before opening the road.
Around about know is peak foolishness season... early winter... people without chains, nor even warm clothes, stuck behind jack-knifed trucks and slid into ditches. Gene-selection theory applies.
