    Chrysler selling Viper business

The No. 3 U.S.-based car company said wednesday that it had been approached by potential buyers for the Viper Unit, which Chrysler wants to sell as part of its strategy of focusing on a smaller number of core products. Analysts said the division could fetch up to $100 million. Potential buyers include East Asian and Indian automakers that have been looking to get instant entree into global markets by buying established brands.

Not a good sign, this is very bad news. If Cerberus sells the Viper Unit it will be curtains for Chrysler. Cerberus closed Chrysler's Pacific Design Studios in California which has designed all of Chrysler's best designs in the last 15 years. What's next the sale of Jeep? Chrysler is a dying company they need a Lee Iaccoca to turn them around if Cerberus sells the Viper Group it will signal that it plans on selling off the company in bits and pieces.

Or it may sell the entire company as whole to a Chinese or Indian automaker as Bloomberg predicted earlier this year:

On the bright side, if Viper became a separate brand, they'd eventually expand their product lineup to more than one car. A smaller, lighter entry level Viper could be fun.

Yeah, but the problem is that unless the business is bought by a Deep Pockets large company/automaker, it ain't a gonna go nowheres. Even established and successful small volume/specialty automakers like Porsche have a tough time meeting the myriad federal requirements necessary to legally sell a vehicle. A stand-alone shop would face a steep and rocky road indeed.

I'm not sure which industry is more highly regulated -- auto makers or drug makers.
