I think it just shows that the GOP is seriously lacking in principles and fundamental honesty.

Oh, they have principles, alright.... the acquisition and maintenance of power by any means necessary!

As for honesty: The GOP is the epitome of dishonesty; its legacy of double-talking goes all the way back to its first president - Dishonest Abe.

One of the things that Bob said in his interview on the Glen Beck show was that starting around 1994, the GOP's primary purpose was:
    1. Getting reelected
    2. Raising money to fund goal #1

He said that starting around that time, those were the only subjects talked about in party meetings. Other important topics, such as the party's platform, state of the nation, etc. were never discussed.

Has that not been the main goal since elections were invented?

It's long been a goal; the GOP has made it the goal.

Historically speaking, the GOP is responsible for the destruction of the American republic (in which sovereignty derived from the consent of the governed, not by force and coercion, through their representatives at the state and local level). It's no accident that Adolf Hitler had complimentary things to say about Abe "The Great Centralizer" Lincoln in "Mein Kampf."

But the GOP's power lust receded for a time under the influence of Goldwater, then Reagan. The rise of the Bushes brought the GOP back to itself.

Lincoln would recognize (and cheer) the current GOP as very much the grandchild of his GOP. And The Chimp a worthy inheritor of the Lincoln legacy of federal lawlessness, militarism/empire, corporate glad-handling and wheedling, a monarchical executive and police state measures/open-ended assault on the rule of law.

What's most galling of all, though, is how many people in flyover country still support The Chimp and the GOP - because it brays about "family values" and ostentatiously wraps itself in the flag.

I have no hope for the future. We are either going to get a form of socialism or a form of corporatism; maybe a fusion of both. Freedom and liberty are lost causes.

    They have been since Appomatox.
