I, too, like those old Montes - and agree the latter-70s versions were kind of weak. But Chevy did a good job resurrecting the car in the '80s, esp. the 5.0 HO SS. That was a fun car!Originally Posted by misterdecibel
The other night I saw an original '70-'72 Monte Carlo. It looked good in all-black.
The original Monte was an interesting car. They took a Malibu chassis, shortened the wheelbase by about 10" or so, and changed the front suspension geometry. I don't remember if it was a negative scrub radius or a positive scrub radius, but the Monte had a special kingpin design that changed the scrub radius to supposedly make the car steer and handle more "European", and it kind of worked. The original Monte was noticeably more responsive to the steering wheel than other American cars of the time.
Of course GM ruined it with an utterly conventional replacement in 1973, and the Monte Carlo was never "special" again, just another disco cruiser.

A man's greatest mistake is to think he is working for somebody else.
That is a hunky-looking car!
I also love the Pontiac GP from the same era....
