I've seen some comment suggesting that the local "shortages" are self induced, that is people who normally drive around 1/4 full have become worried and filled up. There's still the same amount of fuel but it now resides in cars.

True or not, I dunno, but that did happen during tghe government induced gas shortages of the 70s.

It's true that a change in people's behavior can cause a shortage.
But that's a short-lived phenomenon -- as soon as everyone who was going to start filling up sooner has started, the supply of gas will catch up with demand.

The pipelines can only transport so many gallons per day. There are tanks at the distributors to deal with fluctuations (gas is delivered in batches through the pipeline, so there needs to be storage at the pipeline terminus in any case), but when a lot of people change their habits all at once, that storage isn't enough. But eventually, supply will catch up.

There are tanker-trucks bringing gasoline in from Tennessee and South Carolina to places like Asheville, which to all accounts, is bone dry of gasoline.

That's interesting, as fuel is plentiful here - saw one station posted at $3.219 for 87 today. Of course, the pipeline through here runs to the CA refineries as well as the Texas ones.

Will anything but farm tractors and Toyotas run on 87? And who pays for roads at $3.20/gallon? We in the civilised world pay $4.80 approx., of which much goes to pay for roads. Even then, patronage of urban rail has trebled in 5 years, and US car makers can't even give their vehicles away. My LS1 sedan is looking more and more like an icon of another age...

Every maker here is having difficulties disposing of the SUV stock. OTOH hybrids and small cars are flying off the lots.

We are still up at $3.60 in Florida.

US octane numbers are an average of the research & motor test values. You can just make out the formula on the button in the photo:

(R + M) / 2

I think the S2000 is the only Honda that requires premium (93 octane), with all the others running on regular (87 octane).
