Why I will be voting for Obama:
The Republicans must be held accountable for ...
* George W. Bush, arguably the worst president of the past 100 years; an arrogant, fear peddling demagogue of staggering imbecility;
* Becoming the party of Big Government - in the name of "security" and for the benefit of the military-industrial complex;
* Turning the U.S. into a thug state that openly practices torture, "renditions" and other forms of abuse;
* Turning the U.S. into a nascent police state by assaulting habeaus corpus protections and claiming the prerogative to arrest and detain anyone, without charge, and to hold them indefinitely - merely on the say-so of the president or some other authority;
* The (so-called) "Patriot" Act and "Homeland" Security;
* Eavesdropping on citizens without warrant or probable cause;
* "Free Speech Zones";
* Equating dissent or disagreement with treason and lack of love for country;
* Equating support for country with necessary (and unquestioning) support for the GOP, its leaders and policies;
* Pushing Christian fundamentalism as a would-be state religion;
* Pursuing disastrous and unnecessary wars of empire in Iraq and Afghanistan;
* Refusing to ever acknowledge mistakes or be held accountable for them;
* Pursuing an even more disastrous "free trade" and "privatization" ideology that has fucked over ordinary Americans for the benefit of the corporate kleptocracy.
* Socialism (and a safety net) for the rich and well-connected; the freeeeeeeeeee market for everyone else.
Just a brief list.
The point being, the Republicans are neither conservative nor patriotic.
They are the party that manipulates and demagogues both those things to get its personnel elected and to enhance their power over us. That is all they seek - power. Period.
We are today less free - and more watched, monitored, catalogued and badgered by government at all levels - than we have ever been. Thanks to the Republicans.
Our dollars buy less, our jobs and economic situation are in greater peril than they have been in since the 1970s - or even the 1930s. Thanks to the Republicans.
Public idiocy and know-nothingness has become mainstream - courtesy of the Republicans and their mind-rot fundie Christianity.
Based on a single terror attack, we have been pushed toward a Security State in which whatever freedoms we have we have not by inviolable right but only so long as those in power choose to allow it. Subject to change at any time. Because we might be "attacked" at any time.
Will Obama bring us more of the same? He may indeed. But it is impossible for me to support the GOP in the slightest. I wouldn't piss on McCain to put him out if he happened to be lit on fire in a ditch by the side of the road. He - and the entire GOP establishment - must be taught a severe lesson; one they will never forget - if they even manage to survive as a force on the national stage.
An Obama landslide might just do the trick. It might cause the schmucks who currently run the GOP and who represent it at the highest level (guys like The Chimp and Karl Rove and women like that godawful trollop Sarah Palin) to be cast out of conservative politics forever, to be replaced by men and women who will pursue true conservative ideals of limited, accountable government, respect for individual rights, the rule of law - and who base their views on reason and common sense, not the Baaahbul.
And that is why I will be voting for Obama this year. And against everything the GOP has done, is and stands for.

This whole campaign is the most sickening display I have ever seen in my life. I would rather watch a pig barf than know that McCain and Obama are taking up my air.
Eric - You might want to watch this.

I am very sympathetic to Barr - and share almost all the Libertarian Party's beliefs/policy preferences. I would like to vote for Barr; but the race in VA is very close - and for me, this year, the number one priority is to see the GOP lose. Hopefully, by a devastating margin.Originally Posted by chiph
So, I will vote against the GOP - by voting Obama - in the hope that by helping to destroy the GOP, we can make the future for the Libertarian Party better!
