    Revenue generators on the way out?

    It's good news day!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Lead line from one of our national daily newspapers;

    Speed cameras face the end of the road
    Towns join rush to ditch money-making machines.

    Towns all over the country are joining in the rush to get rid of fixed speed cameras. Swindon, a Conservative Council run borough, has already got rid of the pernicious yellow boxes afer councillors became increasingly angry that, whilst they were paying 320,000 per annum to maintain the things, all the revenue was going to central government. Portsmouth City Council said they, too, could be scrapping the cameras. Walsall's transport chief said all 47 cameras in the district could be pulled down. He said 'It is about establishing respect with the motorist. These cameras have no impact on speeding and drivers understandably view them as traps to siphon off money for the Government'. The issue will be raised at the next meeting of Birmingham City Council - the largest local authority in the country. David Sparks a representative of the Local Government Association, which represents all councils in England and Wales has confirmed that other councils are also considering scrapping cameras, he predicted a move towards the more effective speed warning signs. (Author's note: These are signs that flash up a warning message when approached by a speeding vehicle - I must admit I find them much more effective. They also have the advantage that one can spend more time looking at the road than looking at one's speedometer.)

    So, is the writing really on the wall for cameras? What about the new technology cameras, the dreaded 'Speed Averaging' monsters, will they disappear too?? Will we see the last of the Government's favourite cash generating machines and get back to the days when professional (in every sense of the word) traffic policing will return???

    WATCH THIS SPACE!!!

    Here. it's just the reverse. More and more cameras are popping up and being used to aggressively fleece drivers. DC and Arizona are especially awful....

    Usually with most things bad, recession, unemployment, productivity downturn etc. it is the UK that follows the US about a year later. Maybe this is one of the few examples where the UK is leading you for a change - if so, then you could have much to look forward to. ;D

    I think tickets generated by camera are total BS. What would be the next logical step.. Face recognition cameras that generate pedestrians tickets for jaywalking?

    It'd be amusing, Ken, if you could dig up a quote from him back when the cameras were proposed -- something like "Will put a stop to reckless speeders in our communities" would be good.

    Getting rid of these things would truly be a godsend. But I think it will require a public consensus that rejects the "saaaaafety justifies annnnything" mindset that has been dominating public policy for 20-plus years now.

    I see no signs of this changing here; quite the opposite, unfortunately....
