Rest in peace 80s.
"Tutto nello Stato, niente al di fuori dello Stato, nulla contro lo Stato " -Mussolini
All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.
I have to admit the 80s seemed like a cool time. When I think about them, because I really didn't live them, they seemed to have been the last real decade of purity and a clean society for America. I mean, yeah there was problems, but nothing like the social problems and weird shet we have going on now.

That's it, in a nutshell.
There were problems then, of course - but society didn't have the feel of imminent disintegration and random violence/chaos/ugliness that is everywhere today.
The pop culture stuff, for example, may have been vacuous and so on - but it was still "up" and happy and about having a good time, not degrading and about being an asshole/thug (like rap music).
And crime? You pretty much had to go looking for it - whereas now, it can find you.
The government had its issues, but at least they weren't constantly trying to scare the shit out of everyone and darkly hinting at imminent death if we didn't surrender our freedoms to the Great Decider, etc.
