But as you point out Eric, hard working, honest, skilled people are going to lose their homes, marriages, health, and have their lives turned into a living hell. Myself, I'm burning up 401k money, that I thought I'd never touch. Would have never imagined that with 35 yrs experience and two degrees I would be unemployed, no software sales, no contracts, no job - not even an interview.
This all started in the mid 90's - with monopoly corporations: Software, banking, financial, and insurance. Then came the outsourcing to 3rd world countries: professional services, manufacturing, etc.
Now it seems everything is complete - except - what do we do with all those 'extra' people? You know those experienced, older than 40 people.
Here's an idea - perpetual unemployment. Let all those older, expensive people who built this country suffer. Discard them, ignore them, eventually they will go away and die. The higher the unemployment, the more people we have to chose from, we can pay less, and intimidate our employees to work longer hours, and not switch jobs. While we're at it, let's have the government encourage more people to get degrees. This will flood the market with educated people, and lower the wage that they can command.
This situation reminds me of a passage in the book Stalingrad. Hitler sent his troops into Russia. When the Army ran low on supplies and ammo, they asked "where are our supplies?" Hitler responded: "Use the last bullet on yourselves."
