Well, I have the .45 pistol for up close. A Mossberg pistol grip shotgun for around the house. Now I'm looking to build something capable of getting some lead down the street.

I need to get a serious combat rifle, too.
I've never been a hunter, so I have never felt the need (up to now). I'm not nearly as proficient with a rifle, either. I'm a decent shot with a handgun because I have been shooting regularly for years but I only rarely shoot a rife and never got especially comfortable with one.
My SKS (7.62x39 mm) is a not-bad piece for home defense and hunting but what you're building totally outclasses it!
Yeah, I want to have something with decent range.

I've considered getting an old M1 Garand. Semiauto but it's a .30 caliber and has a lot more punch than the .223 in the AR15. The .223 is designed more to main and injure. The M1 puts them down. I won't neccessarliy aim to kill but if I aim a lethal weapon at somebody, they did something to warrant lethal force. If I ever just waved a weapon around, my dad would probably come up out of the ground and get me. I'll aim to stop someone not kill them but if they die, well, tough titty.

Just did a little reading on that weapon. Seems like a really nice collectors type weapon.
Said the effect range is just shy of 500 yards.

I really need to git me a decent rifle. The SKS I've got now is ok in the sense that it works (most of the time) and it has decent punch, but it's still pretty crude.
But, wife says floors need to be refinished first!

They're expensive, but Nikons have really clear glass. I like them better than the Leo Vari-X.

If you ever get the chance, buy some HK mags for your AR. They don't bind up..at all. Unlike the GI mags which bind as soon as the follower gets the teensiest bit out of alignment.
