As far as being in an accident: I would bet the Caprice is more crashworthy than a current compact car, despite not having air bags, etc.
It would definitely handle a minor fender-bender far better, in terms of physical damage to the car itself.
That was a great ad. I remember seeing it on TV, believe it or not.
Those EPA figures are way off. Don't forget, EPA figures have been revised twice since. In 1985, they multiplied city figures by .78 and highway figures by .9. In 2008, the EPA changed the testing methodology to better represent today's driving environment, including AC use and other things like that. All mileage standards are based on the combined city/highway mileage from the OLD formula. Still, that chevy should get mid 20's with an OD transmission at 70 mph.
