The Ford Explorers like mine has 2 different 4.0L V6 engines, a regular & a SOHC engine. How can someone like me that has no clue how to tell which is which, know which engine he or I have. I'm including pics of the engine, that way someone can hopefully tell me which one I have.

Jeez, Tim, I can't even see the engine under all that trunking and pipework. My guess is the best way to find out would be from the VIN plate which should enable you to find out exactly what you have got. If you can find the plate post a photo of it which may help.Originally Posted by bikerlbf406

Yeah I decided to do some research online with the help of my VIN & was able to come up that I have the 170hp 4.0L OHV, not the 210hp SOHC

This is just a general rule but may be helpful:
Overhead cam engines (SOHC, DOHC) usually have wider valve covers than pushrod, or overhead valve (OHV) engines. There may be a round hump near the valve/cam cover if it's an OHC engine, too.
