The Feds really stretched the limits of the Constitution--to say the least--when creating the drug laws in the early 20th century. They essentially skirted the 10th Amendment by utilizing existing tax laws.
I do not use drugs nor do I advocate their use but it's painfully obvious that the current drug laws are arbitrary and insane. We figured out that Prohibition was a mistake, but somehow the same concept as applied to drugs remains in effect.
I suspect that the reason has less to do with mistaken ideology and more with economic motivations. Drug money props up the governments of many countries and our own country has been dealing in drug smuggling for some time now.
