You'll never recover the extra money in fuel savings; you have to think of it as an investment in the planet or a social responsibility tax.
As for styling, the choices of old are gone, to such an extent that nobody even talks about 'styling' as an attribute anymore. Maybe that's good, but it's also boring.
The choices now boil down to an aero blob or a space-efficient box.
The aero blobs are differentiated from one another in subtle ways.
The boxes are differentiated only by their degree of ugliness. ... and some of them are world class contest winners in that respect.
