    Memorial Day hike (death march)

Just got back from a nice day trip here:

    http://www.roanoke.com/outdoors/hiking/43059.html

It's really closer to 14 miles, if you don't have someone to drive you back the 2 miles to the place where the loop ends back to your car!

    Man, that looks hard.

The trails around here have ascents and descents, but they're pretty mild in comparison to what you find in the Blue Ridge area.

    My feets be pretty sore!

But it's a great hike. Incredible views; and the trail's difficulty keeps out the riff-raff. I only encountered one other person - and this was on Memorial Day.

You can break it up and do it as an overnighter, too.

PS: Ever do McAfee Knob on the AT?

I might have - does it start at a store, and end up at a stone hiking shelter at the top of the mountain?

    Ahh, no. Never been there.

Found it on Google maps, though. That's a pretty good drop-off!

The view at the top is stupendous; one of the best east of the Mississippi. It's well worth doing, if you're ever in the area.
