    Did this hike today...

I needed a break and decided to hike MacAfee's Knob, which is part of the Appalachian Trail near Catawba, which is near Roanoke - which is about 40 miles from where we live. It's about a 7 mile round trip with a pretty decent elevation gain and spectacular panoramic views once you reach the top. Here is a link with info and some pics:

No hike this weekend for me - I rode the bike for just over 10 miles.
Maybe I haven't found the right trails yet, but the mountain biking in Austin has been a disappointment.

That's too bad; I'd heard it was a pretty area...

Among the many things we like about our area is the beauty of the countryside - and that it's not yet ruined by too damned many people (and all the crap that comes with too damned many people). Abundant trails - and you usually have them pretty much all to yourself.

Wen we lived in Northern Va., the nice trails around Skyline Drive were all ruined by the presence of people everywhere. On the popular trails (Old Rag, for instance) you couldn't go ten minutes without encountering people.

    It sucked.

Some of the parks/trails closer in towards Austin are being killed by the sheer number of people on them. The one I've been going to is south of the airport, and you might run into another group every 20-30 minutes.
