I have learned over the years that if you can do something yourself - you are better off taking the time to do it yourself.
Here's my story:
I build my own PC's. All seperate components: case, mother board, power supply, video card, hard drive, etc.
I had a PC with a 'raid array' of disks, and I couldn't recover it. I decided to let some "pro's" take a look at.
First I get a call and they tell me they can't recover. I made misktake in asking them to replace the drive.
Two days go by - it takes 10 minutes to replace a drive.
I ask: "Is it done?" - they then told me I also needed a new power supply!
So I said OK.
Then I get the call that I need a new mother board. By this time I thought maybe the PC was hit by some transient voltage. So I say OK.
Then they call me and say: "you need a new case!!"
I went to the shop - and took home the PC in a box.
What they had done was use a cordless screwdriver and pressed so hard that they punched the standoff's for the motherboard, through the bottom pan of the chassis. And shorted out the PC.
They ruined $150 worth of memory. I fixed the chassis with some fiber washers from the hardware store.
I was stupid also.
