    Driver didn't see the motorcyclist

Yet again, another car driver makes a left in front of a motorcyclist, failing to yield, resulting in the death of the rider.

What makes it worse is that the rider was on the way to a safety class, and the driver was the wife of a town police officer.

The SMIDSY (Sorry, Mate, I Didn't See You) is one of our commonest forms of biking collisions over here. In line with current police thinking I use the word 'collision' rather than 'accident' as collisions are frequent and accidents (a no blame occurence) are quite rare.

    Amen to that.

I, too, am weary of hearing about "accidents" that aren't.

Having to swerve suddenly - and striking another car (or bike) as a result - because a deer suddenly jumped into the roadway... that's an accident.

Turning in front of a bike without signaling (as appears to the be the case here) isn't.

Also, why wasn't she charged with failing to signal?

That typically accompanies the situation described. The motorcycle rider assumes the oncoming car is going to continue straight. He is killed when it suddenly turns in front of him, with no prior warning.
