    Property Tax

Had something dawn on me this week.

So I get my all my property tax bills in the mail, open them, and reflexively begin a session of uncontrollable cussing and stomping around.

Once the smoke cleared I realized that I/we are being taxed on our homes as if they are a higher rate than what they are worth.

I'm being taxed at a rate of at least 30% higher than what my home could sell for if it could even sell at all.

Today I called the County Treasurer to discuss the matter and they told me the assessed value of my home for taxing purposes holds constant for four years!

What kind of shit is that?

    Fucking bullshit pisses me off.

And I'm paying two sets of taxes for my property because on paper it's listed as two adjoining 0.5 acre lots when to me it's just one fucking yard with a house on it!

OMG I am bring fucking robbed and can't do shit about it!

Robbed everyday in every way, just amazing.

Also found out my '94 Saturn, basically a fucking auto-tow junk yard car, was assessed at $1,500.

It's all laughable, the whole system.

    Ah feeeeeel your pain!

    Exact same situation here.

They jacked up the assessment to a ridiculous amount; at first it was easily $40,000-$60,000 more than I could sell the house for now. I challenged the assessment and got it lowered, but it's still significantly higher than what the house would sell for.

I despise the tax on property above all else. It's even worse than the income tax, because the tax on your land/home means you will never really own it. You pay rent to the government every year, forever.

PS: I'm also still being hammered on property taxes for vehicles, too. They just nailed me again for $120 on my almost 13-year-old pickup; total bill for all my vehicles was around $400.

They are literally robbing us blind.

It's long past-due that we had a revolution in this country....

I'm getting nailed for $300 on vehicles.

Thank gawd they don't know about my freaking atvs, or I would get hammered for more.

How can I go about getting them to drop there assessment on my house?

I'm thinking they are about 40k on mine too!

    Shit just ain't right man.

I really don't understand how we let them get away with this shit.

It's tax on top tax on top of tax for everything!

I bet 55% of every dollar I earn goes to taxes! -maybe more

Check with your county; there's a process by which you can appeal the assessment based on what places similar to yours have sold for recently. Note, not what they were asking - what they actually sold for. Once you have a few "comps" you can use that to argue that your assessment should be in that ballpark vs. what they hit you up for.

The assholes don't know about my Trans-Am. Thank Elvis for that. It's worth more than all my other cars/trucks/bikes combined! So I guess I am getting a "deal" on that!

Yeah, no question: The average middle class wage slave is paying out 50-plus cents on every dollar in taxes, once you add up federal, state and county taxes, plus property taxes, plus sales taxes, plus gas taxes, plus all the other endless taxes we pay on every damn thing we do.

It is completely out of hand.

I don't think anyone ought to be paying more than 20 percent of their income in taxes - period.

Medieval serfs were taxed at a lower rate than we are today. For real.

Guess I have some research to do at the county office.

Having to call around all the time and contest bills drives me completely nuts and it's something I do often.

Who do you use for insurance for your hot rod?

I've tried antique car insurance places, but they want a photo of the vehicle in an enclosed garage which I don't have.

It's a big pain in the ass... and of course, they don't care about wasting your time as they steal your money. But it's worth doing. Especially if they (county) raise the rate next time.

I have an "agreed value" policy w/American Classics. Yeah, they require the car be stored in a secure garage, which I have. There's also a mileage restriction (2,000 annually) and you have to have antique tags.

But, if someone steals it or it gets hit by some asshat with no insurance, they cut me a check for the policy's stated "agreed value." I've got it at $15,000 now. Policy is very affordable; it's only about $200 annually, as I recall.

Yeah, I need to build something.

    Have antique tags already.
