    Last day for Pontiac

    The contracts expire today.

But there are still 24 unsold Pontiacs on the lots around the US. Someone will be lucky enough to buy the last new Pontiac..ever.

I doubt anyone much cares. These "Pontiacs" are just shells. Arguably, the last real Pontiacs were built in 1981, which was the last year Pontiac still sold a Pontiac-built V-8.

Maybe the Fiero counts, too - although it had Chevette underpinnings and a "corporate" engine, too.

The G8 isn't bad. But GM had to go to Australia for it.

    I thin it's very good, actually - but it's not a Pontiac - and that's the problem.

Just slapping the emblem on a car doesn't transform it into something else.

I submit this is why Pontiac died. It became irrelevant. Just another marketing arm for rebadged GM product.

There's a battle royal going on right now among Pontiac fans about the handful of aftermarket-built "Trans-Ams" built off the current Camaro platform. I agree with the faction that thinks a Camaro with a Pontiac badge on it is still a Camaro. Maybe a modified Camaro. But a Camaro nonetheless.

The last real Trans-Am was built in 1981.
