    Horrible loss for the US

I buy a fair amount of hardware. Some of it at a local hardware store. They're friendly, they get to know your name, etc.

My neighbor say: "Gee Home Depot is cheaper why don't you go there?"

Right now I'm remodeling a bathroom, large hall, and a 16 X 30 rec room. I looked into renting a panel lifter for the sheetrock ceilings. Yikes - Home Depot wants $45 a day. I'm working alone - I'd need it for a week, atleast.

At the hardware store I was BS-ing with the manager Jeff. Told him how much HD wanted for a panel lifter rental.

Jeff says to me: "My dad bought one to finish a cabin a couple of years ago. Would you like to borrow it? You can have it for a month or two. We're not using it!"

We have thrown away friendship, community, helpfulness. All for a couple of bucks.

Loaning me that panel lifter more than wiped out any savings at HD.

Exactly. This anecdote says a great deal, in plain language.

The bum's rush to the bottom - the putting of the last fraction of a penny of profit possible above any other consideration - has killed the country.

    Efficiency! Productivity!

They are the Molochs of our doom.
