Modern (after 2007) diesel owners are not in the same league as people who have been driving diesels for years. A 2010 diesel Jetta for example has almost no glow plug wait, doesn't smoke, doesn't smell (modern filtered diesel fumes smell like hot air), doesn't shake. Some may see this as a good thing, but I like to hear, smell, and feel the engine I'm driving. The only thing a modern diesel owner has to do differently is fill up at a different pump.
Hell, the '10 TDI has a lowly 16.5:1 compression. My '03 TDI has a 19.5:1 compression ratio and my '78 Mercedes has a 21:1 ratio.
