How do you know when you need new tires?

I know it used to be the penny measurement with Abraham Lincoln's head determining when it was new tire time.

Is this still a valid measurement?

    Sure it is.

But you might want to act sooner if it's winter in snow country.

That only works with tires less than seven years old from the date code.
