As long as he doesn't have any experience, he'll actually be happier and healthier over the long run. Now, if he's already a daddy, he'll be pretty grumpy the rest of his life. Non-snipped, males tend to spray their territory. That may be why mom wants it done. Lastly, snipping also lessens the chance of testicular cancer which clears a lot of males out of the wild. A really good cat is hard to find and you really want to help him live a long life.
Spooky reminds me a lot of a cat my sister used to have. All black with a touch of white and just a really good personality. I won't hurt a cat but I'm not really a cat person but when he died I really missed him.

I'd do it. He's about to hit sexual maturity which means he may want to spray. He'll also want to wander - and fight other Toms.
With males, the surgery is a lot less of a big deal. They don't cut him open like they do the girls....

And he looks just like his brother, Foxy. They have the same face; same bushy tail and white spot on the undercarriage. He's also a super cool cat.

Several times I have tried to get pictures of our two cats side by side, just to show the difference in their sizes. At last I have managed it - Calico is the little four pounds and a smidgen (in wet fur) Calico cat, Paddy is the twenty pounds plus lardy lump Maine Coon cross. Click images for full size pictures.

Nice cats and good photos. so I guess one could say one cat is a tug boat while the other is the QE2.(Maybe not that extreme, but the one cat seems to be 3x larger than the other.)
