Hey Eric -
Quit ragging on the Starlet!!! lol.
I owned one for 24 years and you described it to a "T."
You had to have a special technique to defrost the windows. It was a hoot to drive. RWD.. No ABS. No A/C.
The strange thing is that you didn't really need A/C because of a first class ventilation system. You got a nice blast of air from the swivel vents on each side, that increased with vehicle speed.
The 85 mph speedometer was accompanied by a tach, a temp gauge and a fuel gage. The 85 mph speed reflected its top speed of 87 mph perfectly.
I routinely drove it close to top speed everywhere. It got about 28 mpg in town and 31 on the highway. When it was new, it got close to 40, although I may have driven it slower back then (speed limit was 55mph and I lived in the Northeast).
After 24 years, I sold it to a Puerto Rican who told me that he would take care of it.
It was a great car for most of its life.
It is missed by its former owner.
