Driver movement and drivers to watch 2011

The much coveted (43) “rides” in the Cup Series is creating a numbers game again this season.

    Notable Departures:

77 car - Sam Hornish – An Indy 500 winner in the Indy series at the moment does not have a ride. He drove for Roger Penske and is presently not with the team. It would appear he would have an easy path back to the Indy circuit. I will confirm that when I cover the upcoming Indy car series. UPDATE Sam is full-time on the Nationwide Series! http://www.samhornish.com/

82 car - Scott Speed – Another much-heralded open wheel racer has also lost his ride to Kasey Kahne and the Red Bull team for at least this year. Kasey moves on the Hendrick Motorsports next season, and Brian Vickers has returned from his close call with blood clots. Scott Speed is a good driver. It’s a numbers game in this case and he will probably get a ride in Indy or F1. Stay tuned. UPDATE - Scott Speed has filed an 8.5 million $ lawsuit for breach of contract with Red Bull Racing. No car to drive yet this year anywhere.

19 car – Elliot Sadler has lost his ride with the money strapped Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM). He is now racing full-time on the Nationwide Series and has stated that this is great opportunity for him and he needed a break from Cup racing.

    Additions:

115 car – Is driven by Michael Waltrip. He is the owner of Michael Waltrip Racing. He may not run a full schedule. He normally has a (2) car team and he ran some restrictor plate races last year.

There are part-time drivers that ride a few lap and head to the garage. No pub here boys!

Drivers to keep an eye on in 2011 -

The usual suspects: Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Kurt Bush, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, and (with divine intervention) Dale Jr.

The bracket busters: Keep an eye in the rearview mirror. These drivers are going to put veterans out to pasture!

21 car – Trevor Bayne just won the Daytona 500. He may not drive many cup races this year, but is probably the next Kyle Busch.

1 car – Jamie McMurray won Daytona in 2010 along with the Brickyard 400 for Earnhardt Ganassi. He is young and a rising star. He is a serious wheel man and his future is bright.

78 car – Regan Smith would be the talk of the town right now if some idiot had not wrecked him at Daytona. He drives for a smaller underfunded team but was in the top five all day until the wreck. Look for him to drive for the big boys (Hendrick, Roush, or Childress) someday. Top sleeper – could make the Chase!

56 car – Martin Truex – He is fast and talented. When he signs with a good team watch out!

39 car – Ryan Newman – Wins races and somehow does not make the top 12. That will change sooner than later with Tony Stewart’s help.

    Finally, enigmas -

Folks will you remove Dale Jr. from the category above for me please (writer’s cramp). No real explanation needed – Just win a race JR! Juan Pablo Montoya – Has raced with great intensity. Juan you need to finish in order to WIN?? Kasey Kayne – All the talent in the world. If you don’t win with Hendrick next year just saddle up with Jr. Motorsports. Marcos Ambrose – Can win at any venue in any car. I guess home cookin’ (Australia), is just too far away.

Good Luck mate, you should not need any.
