This started my day right. It's nice to see some people, at least, get off the bankster-consumerist treadmill.
We did a similar thing - in concept, anyhow. We went from a much more expensive (at the time) house to a less expensive (and paid-for) one.
It took away a lot of pressure to not have a mortgage or rent to pay. But of course, the government won't leave us alone - and our property taxes have been rising steadily even as the value of our place has dropped considerably.
