    Grinding front disk brakes 04 Dodge Stratus

    Front disk brakes sounds like metal on metal, pads are in good shape, rotors also are good, the dealer says there fine but I don't think they road tested them, no visual rubbing of anything

    Whoever last changed the pads may not have used the anti-squeak stuff; you generally smear this stuff on the back of the pads prior to installing them.

    A possibility, Eric, but failure to fit the anti-squeal shims, or smear the anti-squeal grease on the backs of the pads usually gives a squealing noise, not a grinding noise. A metal on metal sound is usually just that - metal on metal.

    Points to visually check.

    Are the pads all correctly fitted and there isn't one fitted 'back to front'.
    Are the anti-squeal shims, if required, correctly fitted.
    Is there any trace of scoring on either side of each disk.
    Are you sure there isn't something trapped between one of the pads and the disk.

    Personally I would remove all the pads and check each piece throroughly before re-fitting. If anything is wrong I would leave it exactly as is and get the shop that fitted them to come and inspect the damage.

    I think more information is needed.

    When is the noise apparent? Is it coming from one wheel or both wheels? Is it there all the time or only when the brakes are applied? Does the intensity of the grating increase with increased brake pressure? Does the intensity vary with steering deflection to the left or right? Is it there in forward gear(s) and in reverse? If the rims are non-standard has a spacer been omitted so that the disk is touching the wheel?
