That's very true.
I noticed that trend starting 25 years ago when I moved to Texas the first time. You had people in shiny brand new Vettes driving 54 mph in the left lane on Loop 820 in Fort Worth.
South of Dallas, I always encountered a brand new Volvo wagon hogging the left lane at about 57 mph (in a 55).
But... in those days, you would see some fast folks out there tooling at 100 mph. I remember being in my 1987 Acura driving with a pack of cars at about 100-110 mph all the way from Ferris to Madisonville, TX on I-45, about a 100 mile stretch right at 100 mph, slowing only for the known speed traps. Back then, the posted limit was 55 mph.
We were few in the crowd.
In 1990, I was able to open it up on I-49 through LA cruising at about 105 for about 55 miles of the newly opened 65 mph interstate. I was a little more nervous as I wasn't familiar with the territory, but it was fun nevertheless... on 88 cent gasoline.
The crowd has speeded up since then, my chances of a ticket for overall driving has dropped significantly, but I miss those Bonzai runs. With the crowds out there on the highway, I don't think I could do it today.
