This mind set has been around for decades. Back in the 50's, the President of GM once said "What's good for GM is good for the Country". They can't seem to learn from their past mistakes. Back in the 60's, Ralph Nader was pretty much unknown. When he wrote a book entitled "Unsafe at Any Speed", there was a short part about how unsafe the Corvair was. GM decided to destroy him professionally and set several private detectives on him. They got caught and GM had to bring in the spin doctors (although they weren't called that then) and pay some hefty fines as well as answer questions in Congress, which GM had pretty much owned before that. The Corvair was dropped about the time they got the bugs out and Ralph Nader got a boost he could never have paid for.
