They're going to be mailing out a quarter-million USB drives to customers who have the MyFord Touch system in their vehicles, which will contain a significant upgrade to the system.

Why is this interesting? It's because previously, when a hardware maker (autos, in this case..) ships a product, they typically ignore it afterwards. They're usually focusing on the next iteration, and don't care about those who have already bought the product, only about people who are about to buy their vehicles.

Ford has realized that their customer expectations have changed - they don't want to take their cars by the dealer and get charged a $90 "diagnostic fee" for an update to fix a software problem.
